Purchased one License

This issue has been solved. See solution.

We purchased one Backup Exec 2010 Remote Agent license for Windows 2003 Server but installed the agent on 4 Windows 2003 Servers and all the servers are being backed up. When we ran the license assessment tool it says "Purchase 3 More Licenses for Windows Server Remote Agent".

What kind of problems we can face if we don't purchase more licenses?

Backup Exec will run just fine, but you are not compatible with the licensing requirement.
If you call support and they find out, they may not help you.

Remote Agent for Windows is a gentlemen's license. The backup will run fine but its better to be

compliant with the license agreement.

You backups may (will)  also fail with License Violation error.

Its better to have all the agents licensed correctly and legally.

Er, no they won't. When we license BE we license for say 80 Remote Agent for Windows Server agents...I can go out an install 85 and true-up the license count which is exactly what we do. There is never any mention of checking for an agent count in BE 2010!

Legally speaking he has to buy 4 licenses...but he won't get any error.

As mentioned, if one RAWS serial is installed on the media server, you can backup as many Remote machines running an agent as you wish. You may or may not get any kick-back from Symantec (probably will if it ever comes up), but if you have an annual audit and the auditors are even halfway bright, you  will fail the software licensing portion of your audit

(Sorry for jumping in late)

As information I have attached the End User License Agreement (EULA) for Backup Exec and with regards licensing issues we also encourage individuals and companies to be familiar with the information available at the following external (non-Symantec) website

Thanks Colin, I took the chance to grab a copy of this too...I see the BSA is also in South Africa, so they seem to cover countries quite well.

I do know that the auditors here don't really look at licensing too often, but we are pretty fickle about licensing for our clients so we relicense yearly.
