Push install in Computer Mode actually puts it in User Mode?

Client is Server 2003 R2 SP2. I did this on two different servers, so I know it's not me. :-) All workstations are in User Mode and all servers are in Computer Mode.

I pushed an install from the SEPM 11 MR4 MP1a console using the 32-bit MR4 MP1a package. It was set to Computer Mode and verified by two people as set that way. I searched for the Unmanaged Computer using my domain account, which is a local admin on the server. We do use AD for the User Mode computers. I specifically selected the Server group it needed to go in.

Each time after the server checked in, it shows up under User Mode in the AD OU where my domain account is located. I have to copy it into the correct server group and switch it to computer mode from SEPM. Then I have to resync SEPM to AD to get rid of the entry in User Mode.

Any ideas?

Ray

Hi RAJP, Our developers have

Hi RAJP,

Our developers have looked into this and have determined once a user has installed the product in user mode all the installs from that user will be in user mode.  You need to log in as someone who has not done a user install and is not set to user mode with the package set to computer mode and it should install the package as computer mode.

Best,

Eric

OK, that explains it

Thanks, Eric.

It certainly threw us for a loop. Does this sound like the sequence?

I pushed SEP 11 to my computer from the SEPM using my domain account. The push was in user mode.

I did an Unmanaged Computer Discovery to locate some servers. I did the discovery from my domain account and AD SEPM login.

I pushed the SEP client to some servers in computer mode and had to shuffle them around to get them back into computer mode and in the proper group.

This will keep on happening forever for me if I use my account.

User Mode Fix

Eric,

Does this mean that if someone were to accidentally install one client in User Mode, any subsequent installs done by the same person will be in User Mode, regardless of install settings?

If this is true, is there any type of fix?

I'm testing right now by creating a new Admin in SEPM to try and push a new install to a test machine.

Ouch! Sounds like a terrible

Ouch! Sounds like a terrible bug to me - in our case, there is only ONE person who ever installs - ME. And should I goof, or for some reason need a different install type, because my name is Bill, I'll go to my grave installing SEP in that mode, even if I don't want to?

Yeah, "Ouch!" pretty much

Yeah, "Ouch!" pretty much sums it up.

I've verified it has nothing to do with the SEPM admin account you use, which means it's tied to either my account credentials I use to push the packages, or perhaps it will just be every PC, laptop, and server I log into for the rest of my existence...

Planned Fix?

We are having the same problem as cable mite.  Clients are always installed in computer mode, but some of them randomly switch over to user mode, for no apparent reason.  Is there a fix for this or one in the works?

Same here we have 7000

Same here we have 7000 clients and of those approx. 160 have moved to users mode and also moved to a server group we noticed it around the begining of April but it could have started earlier. I have an outstanding case with Symantec for this I am still waiting for the Tech to get back to us on this.

We are currently on MR2 MP1 we are about to upgrade to MR4 MP2 but this is holding us back because in testing, upgrade clients are going into user mode and into the server group.

Once you have installed

This does not make sense. We have never installed in USER mode, yet PCs suddenly convert to user mode.

MR99 will fix it all.

Just an update

Just an update, we are still experiencing this problem with MR4 MP2 new installs and also with workstations that have been off line for over 1 month and are returened to the network. What is interesting is we have found that the clients are being homed into the last modified location e.g. one of a server admins created a new location now our workstation clients are being homed into this location and in user mode.

Yes, this is very unfortunate..  all my DC's are stuck in user mode, the option to switch to computer is "grey" and the script doesn't work.  Any other recommendations?
