  • 1.  PXE Boot Issues on Site Server

    Posted Nov 30, 2015 08:50 AM

    Good Afternoon,

We are having major issues on one of our site servers, last week we had to reinstall all agents and plugins on the server because Altiris jobs which were going to that server to pull down software etc were timing out (this was effecting all imaging done on that site).

The issue we have now is after the reinstall, The PXE boot in that IP range is not working as it should, most of our users have NIC as first boot device - normally if the device isn't told to boot in to WinPE then the PXE will count down, 3..2..1 and then boot in to Windows.

However all users are now stuck at this screen when booting up (it goes no further)

So we are having to advise them to mash the Esc button before NIC loads to avoid getting stuck here, I have a support call logged with Symantec but we haven't made much progress yet, they find it hard to understand that we have NIC set as first boot but don't want to boot in the PXE/PE, we just want it to progress in to Windows (I hope others are set up this way and can understand)

All other site servers are working fine, we'd actually done the same thing (agent clean, plugin clean & reinstall) on another site server a few months ago and it worked fine.

The PXE was setup by someone who has now left, I've tried recreating the PXE environment through the console but it's not having any of it, plus, symantec support asked me to delete the site server from manage > computers (it has since recreated) and since I've done this it doesn't appear in the preboot configuration status list:

It does however appear in the PXE Server Configuration list (alongside a blank name entry - which occured when they asked me to delete the site server from Altiris. (Server in question is Inagua)

Services on server are running fine:

and here are a list of plugins on the server:

I really need this working ASAP as every morning users ring up complaining about being stuck at the PXE screen. Any PXE boot experts around? I have a support call with Symantec setup for Wednesday (next time I can get to the site server location) but if I can get it sorted before then all the better!

    Thanks,

    Jon

One thing I did notice is the client IP is given as 172.27.2.253, but the server's IP is 172.27.1.253, is this normal? I can't ping the first address and have no idea where it has come from.

I should also say that if I need to strip the agent and start over again I am willing to, but I havent as of yet found a simple step by step guide to getting PXE back up and running.
