PXE boot suddenly stopped working.

Created: 09 Apr 2013 | 3 comments

Hi, first post, so Hello all!

I have a 7.1 environment running on Win2008r2 and it seems that Pxe has stopped working all of a sudden.

I have checked that the 4 SBS services have started (and in the correct order) and also checked the preboot configs and the pxe server configs. Now the weird thing is, it has been reported to me that when the server is restarted, PXe starts to work again until the services are stopped and re-started. Downtime for this server isnt always a possibility, so does anyone have any ideas as to why this happens?

Thanks.

When you say that PXE stops working, what do you mean? Any DHCP client that reboots gets an IP and hangs at network boot instead of then booting to the next device or that a client you drop a Boot to PXE job onto doesn't boot into PXE, instead it just exits the NIC boot and continues booting from the HDD?

I am experiencing the same issue. After restarting the PXE services to allow a known computer to boot to PXE something breaks.

The actual client that I am trying to boot doesnt display any error messages or timeouts (doesnt pick up an IP), rebooting the server fixes the issue straight away. The fact that the reboot fixes the problem suggests to me that this is an issue with the Altiris PXE server rather than the DHCP/network config.

Any ideas?

In my experience the altiris PXE is not stable. Maybe 7.1 sp1 will be better. We will see.
