PXE Config Utility/Boot Disk Creation
Good Evening,
I have a question regarding creating a boot disk for Winpe. I am very new to winpe so please bear with me. I have installed winpe on my Windows 2003 Altiris server along with DS 6.9. We are very interested in using the Deployanywhere feature that is supported with this new version. Our destops are all Windows XP Pro SP2. pxe server is installed on one of our domain controllers. I am trying to create a new boot menu option for winpe using the pxe configuration utility. I get through almost the entire boot disk creation configuration but it fails on the very last step when it attempts to create the Pxe files. This is the error i receive:
Error opening file c:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\temp\1\~bootwiz\2164\image\bcdedit.exe
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions as to what I am doing wrong, that would be great.
Thank you!
Julie
On the DS or the PXE server?
Are you creating this PXE boot from the PXE server or from the DS server? You should be using the PXE manager on the DS server and using the shared configuration for creating a PXE image. I don't know why it is using the documents and settings unless you are doing it under the PXE server. It should be using the eXpress share on your DS server for the bootwiz folder.
Also make sure you are making the image while either on the server or RDPed on to the server. I use a remote console on my computer but to make any PXE images I have to RDP on to the server.
On the DS server's PXE manager also verify that the PXE server is correctly reporting into the DS by looking at the status tab.
Thanks for your response.. i
Thanks for your response.. i appreciate it. I was using RDP to create the image and did verify that the pxe server was listed in the status tab. this morning instead of using rdp, i went to the console directly, but still receive the same error. I may end up giving Altiris support a call to see what their thoughts are.. thanks again for your response.. if you can think of anything else, i'd be happy to try it out.
Thanks!!
Altiris support
Altiris support might be your best option then because it looks like it is looking in the wrong place for files. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
RE: PXE Config Utility/Boot Disk Creation
Hello Julie,
What version of DS did you install?
Also, make sure you download the latest WinPE installer from the Altiris (Symantec) site.
I'm using DS69 sp1
I just installed a new Deployment Server in our environment 6.9 Sp1+Mp1
If you are going to have 2 different Pxe Servers on the same vlan segment. Just want to inform that whenever you boot to pxe boot the computer will pick up whichever server it see's first..
also install the winpe 2.1 that altiris provide it will walk you through the steps of setting up the server. It's really that easy if you need some advice let me know, I just finish setting up mine last week.. I'm not using the deployshare just yet, but i got WinPe boot to work.
RE: PXE Config Utility/Boot Disk Creation
Julie,
This could be a rights issue to the PXE folder. To verify this browse to the C:\Program Files\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server check if the PXE folder has administrator rights. Also, check the permissions for the WAIK folder. In summary, both folders need to have administrator permissions.
