PXE Deployment with 7.1 - Pre-Select Automation Processing

  • 1.  PXE Deployment with 7.1 - Pre-Select Automation Processing

    Posted Mar 05, 2010 12:38 PM
Hi everyone, I have installed in test, the newest version of Deployment solution.  I can get a brand new machine to appear in the Deployment Portal and then get it to install an operating system.  The problem is that if I want to redeploy the operating system again to it, it keeps going to the Altiris Pre-Select Automation Processing screen and then boots to the operating system that was already installed.  I have deleted the computer from the Deployment Portal (the only place I know that it exists).  I think it must be hiding somewhere else, but cannot find it.

    Thanks,

    Deryck

I found that if I restart the following services, I can then redploy the operating system.  Is this a bug?

    _Symantec_netBoot_Server
    _Symantec_netBoot_NSiSignal
    _Symantec_netBoot_Mtftp
    _Symantec_netBoot_Interface

I can confirm this behavior in my preproduction environment (private LAN, VMWare Workstation 7).  Running a job in Initial Deployment (whether it completes or fails) will result in the workstation attempting to boot into Automation pre-select.

I have replicated the "fix" several times as follows:

    - Restart service _Symantec_netBoot_Server (this causes the mtftp service to stop)
    - Start service _Symantec_netBoot_Mtftp (this causes error PXE-E77 on workstations)
    - Restart service _Symantec_netBoot_Mtftp (results in successful boot on workstations)

I'm still testing, but there appears to be some sort of caching issue with the client status in relation to the PXE services in DS 7.1.

I called Symantec for support on another issue and mentioned this one.  They have reproduced an issue with clients not booting to PXE after being deleted from the console.  It's a bug and has been passed on to development.

There aren't too many of us using 7.1 yet, so I was glad to see your post. I have another issue at the moment, maybe you have seen this one too?

    1. Initial deployment job takes 5 minutes to actually start

Example:  Unknown machine boots pxe to winpe, select deployment job from initial list.  Wait 5 minutes at least for job to start.
It doesn't matter what the job is, I have tried a disk wipe job, an OS deployment job, same thing.

I've run a few jobs in ID, and I'm not seeing an abnormal delay with most.  I can run a disk wipe/format and it starts immediately.  I've setup a scripted OS install of Win 7 and that takes around 5-6 minutes to actually start, but then it fails anyways.  There's no information written to the job/task status detail that I can find.

My Windows 7 job fails as well, but with a "Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]."  Where does yours fail?

I imported the Windows 7 source and then used my autounattend.xml from my DS6.9.

It fails immediately after detecting the disk configuration.  The Scripted OS Install doesn't even start.  I'm pulling off the config and log files now to examine.

I don't have anything else in the task before my Scripted OS install, I am letting the autounattend.xml file handle the partitioning, sorry I cannot help with that one.
Figured out my other problem with the unattended answer file.  Looks like the %name% token that I used with DS6.9 doesn't work anymore or like it used to.  Trying some other workarounds to rename the computer.

I've found the useful logs at X:\ Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs.

I don't have that file, or cannot find it because my OS installation starts right away.  When the client boots the PE environment which tasks/jobs are you running against it, maybe I can replicate?  Like I said, I am just using the "Perform a Windows scripted install" job, with a customized autounattend.xml.  What are you running before this?

     I had 2 separate issues:
    1. Test VM's were booting x64 PXE image, so the Win7 x86 setup.exe could not launch
    2. SOI scripts look for setup.exe at \\TESTSERVER.altiris.test\deployment\Task Handler\SOI\87a18f29-9cc8-4015-a91a-e37e81889208\sources\setup.exe
#1 is resolved by forcing VM's into x86 PXE

#2 is proving to be a funny issue.  I'm using the CMS7/DS7.1 framework to add the OS install sources for Win7.  I'm adding the directory containing the contents of the ISO and saving.  DS7.1 is saving this in the package parallel to the OEM folder in the SOI folder.

    Example:
    • Created OS Source "Win7x86" and added contents of folder "Win7x86" to package.
    • Setup is looked for at \\TESTSERVER.altiris.test\deployment\Task Handler\SOI\87a18f29-9cc8-4015-a91a-e37e81889208\sources\setup.exe
    • Setup is actually located at \\TESTSERVER.altiris.test\deployment\Task Handler\SOI\87a18f29-9cc8-4015-a91a-e37e81889208\Win7x86\sources\setup.exe
If I move the contents of folder outside "Win7x86" then it appears to launch Win7 setup.  I haven't found any documentation on how/what to select when adding the OS source files.

I imported the source OS and it put it into

    C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SOI\b7739268-f534-43e3-aa86-a64ffb56fead\sources\setup.exe

No need to create subfolders or anything else.  I imported the sources OS from my old DS6.9 server.
