PXE hangs on WinPE 2.1 x86 (x64 works)

Created: 25 Sep 2012 | 2 comments

Hi

We're trying to integrate 2 new laptop models in our DS environment.

The affected laptop models are Dell Latitude E6330 and E6530 (only difference between this two models is the display and the gpu)

We have Altiris DS6.9 SP5 MR1.
We deploy Windows 7 by Script. Both architectures x86 and x64 worked flawless until this new hardware type.

If we try to deploy Win7 x64 by PXE boot using WinPE 2.1 x64 it works without a problem.
If we try to deploy Win7 x86 by PXE boot using WinPE 2.1 x86 it hangs while loading the BootImage on 100% of the progressbar.
Installing a scripted Win7 x86 with a x64 WinPE does not work.

Can someone suggest me a solution/workaround or knows why it hangs?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure if this could be related, but if you look at the last comment in this post:

it could be some sort of relationship. Have you checked the RAM and potentially removed one module for a test if this is applicable?

I had the same problem.  I my case, the resolution was to rebuild the PXE image with the driver for the NIC.

I was fortunate in that I I had a DS for testing that had a PXE image (x86) that did boot on the E6530.  I compared the custom drivers [ C:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Bootwiz\platforms\Winpe2\x86\Drivers\CUSTOM\Drivers ] against my production DS and found 1 missing driver.  Imported the driver, rebuilt the PXE image and did a successful test.

For Dell, CAB source: http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/Dell+Business+Client+Operating+System+Deployment+-+The+.CAB+Files#fbid=H6R3VC1zdVt

I think the XP drivers can substitude for Vista drivers, as the E6530 does not list Vista drivers just Win7 and XP.

I have not used the PXE 2.0 driver CAB but it should work with DS PXE 2.1 since both are based on Vista.

Aloha!
