1.) Can Symantec Backup Exec cloud agents be installed on SQL/Exchange Servers so that these servers can be backed up from Symantec Cloud ?

2a.) If someone have backup exec capacity base license, he can utilize unlimited "application and databases" licenses for example : can backup any numbers of SQL , Exchange , Oracle etc .. Correct ?

2b.) If someone have backup exec capacity base license, he can install unlimited numbers of backup exec media servers ?

2c.) If someone have backup exec capacity base license what are the default agents, options and add-on are included ?

3.) Backup exec small business edition license support three numbers of servers. what are the license type we can use on these these three servers ? means can we backup one SQL, one Exchange and one Active Directory or what does these three means ?

4.) what does it mean, Agent for "vmware and hyper-v" ? is not that means V-RAY license.

5.) "Backup exec agent for windows" license have what capability ? its mean that we can only take filesystem level backups, for example MS word, MS excel, MS powerpoint files backup.

The licensing team should be able to answer your queries in response to 1 & 2. And for the rest ~

3) Three servers support including the media server itself. So additional 2 remote servers can be protected (They can be running Windows or Linux or Mac) & you can backup/restore file level data.

4) Earlier we used to have a separate license for Agent for Vmware & Agent for Hyper-V. In BE 2012, they have been consolidated into one license. So 1 Agent for VMware & HyperV can protect either 1 Hyper-V host or 1 ESX

5) Agent for Windows allows you to backup the remote system's critical data such as its volumes, system state, registry, shadow copy components & flat-file data such as documents, ppts. Databases such as Exchange, SQL etc are not backed up using this license.

4) Agree but my question is Agent for VMware & HyperV means = 1 V-Ray License ?

5.) backup the remote system's

Remote system's mean the servers which are connected with BE Server ? or at some other location ?(I am bit confused now)

critical data such as its volumes, system state

system state does not means Active Directory database ?

4) - V-Ray is just a licensing bundle designed to include the ability to backup Hyper-V or AAVVI and have the GRT capability (so Agent for database licenses in one) Depending on the nuimbers of systems involved the V_ray bundle may be cheaper than buying the separate licenses. Again speak to the licensing team to understand where cost savings might be made. Note with outthe application and database agent licenses the Hyper-V and VMware agents do not offer GRT capability for database content.

5) System state does mean Active Directory for DR purposes when you backup a Domain controller (if you want to restore AD objects individually then you wouild need to appropriate license to use this extra functionality but woudl still backup teh System State)

Remote Systems means any server that is not the core Backup Exec Media server irrespective of whether they are in the same physcial site/location or over a WAN link from the media server.

4) great means "Agent for VMware & HyperV" means that we need to install these agents under Operating System :) ..

5.) System state does mean Active Directory

http://wiki.iaso.com/index.php/Manual:System_State_backup

Backing up the system state is particularly useful if a machine is a Microsoft Exchange Server or a domain controller in a network.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_meant_by_Windows_System_State_Data

What is meant by Windows System State Data?

If you are running a DC it will also back up Active Directory and System volume

thanks pkh, I have already seen this document.

@ VJWARE 3) Three servers support including the media server itself. So additional 2 remote servers can be protected (They can be running Windows or Linux or Mac) & you can backup/restore file level data.

untitled.JPG

(As per Mr. phk guide page # 6 the BE SBE has the protection in it to backup all above APP AND DataBase mention in the snap like Exchange, AD , SQL etc but License is not included and the License has to be purchase.)

4.) The "agent for VMware & HyperV "is use to take the Virtual machines backup exist on ESXi host/Hyper-V host. correct ? means no need to install this agent on all Virtual Machines and only need to install on ESXi host/Hyper-V host

5.) ?

No.  This means that the licences are already included in the SB edition.  You don't have to buy any more licences to backup these applications/databases.

4.) The "agent for VMware & HyperV "is use to take the Virtual machines backup exist on ESXi host/Hyper-V host. correct ? means no need to install this agent on all Virtual Machines and only need to install on ESXi host/Hyper-V host

No.  You cannot install any remote agent on the VMware host.

You would need to install the remote agent in the Vmare/Hyper-V VM's if you want to do GRT restores.

Conflicting words I feel between pkh and VJWARE, please describe

@ pkh : the BE SBE has the protection in it to backup all above APP AND DataBase mention in the snap like Exchange, AD , SQL etc but License is not included and the License has to be purchase.)

No.  This means that the licences are already included in the SB edition.  You don't have to buy any more licences to backup these applications/databases.

==========================================================

Note with out the application and database agent licenses the Hyper-V and VMware agents do not offer GRT capability for database content.

Means the Hyper-V and VMware agents can backup Exchange,SQL,Oracle, SharPoint etc but for GRT we also need application and database agent.

There is no contradiction.  The BE SBE edition expects you to be running the applications that you mentioned in one machine.  You can add the RAWS/RALUS licences to backup another 2 remote machines.

I would also suggest that you confirm everything with the Symantec Licencing department which is the final authority on licencing matters.

Zahid.Haseeb's picture

Let me make my words simple.

 - backup exec SBE has three licenses in it (default). One for media server and two for backing up file level data. if we need to protect SQL, ORACLE etc then we need to buy Application and database agent per application and database

- Hyper-V and VMware agents can backup Exchange,SQL,Oracle, SharPoint etc but for GRT we also need application and database agent license

...on paper it would seem that way, but to prevent confusion, follow pkh's advice too. What we interpret, and what Symantec does when it comes to maintenance renewal at the end of a year's maintenance are 2 separate things.

I believe pkh made that clear enough...

Thanks!
