Question on going forward to the next version after SMS SMTP 5.01

  • 1.  Question on going forward to the next version after SMS SMTP 5.01

    Posted Feb 18, 2009 03:51 PM

We're currently using SMS SMTP 5.01, part of our Endpoint Security Mult-Tier Protection.  I saw from a couple posts that if we decided to go to the next release (Brightmaal Gateway), I would need to BUY a copy of VMWare ESX 3.x in order to run Brightmail Gateway.  Or BUY an appiance version.  Is that correct?

What is my other alternative for my smtp gateway if I do not want to go the VMWare route or appliance router?   After paying to the yearly maintenance cost,  I need to spend additional $$ for the requirement to be able to use the next release.  It would be pretty hard to justify this.

    Can someone clarify this?

    Thank you.

    Hi John,

With the release of the SBG 8.0 in the next few weeks, Symantec wil also support ESXi which is a free VMware product which will mean no additional cost.  You will still be able to use SMS for SMTP if you desire, however the SBG already has tons of great functionality that SMS for SMTP doesn't have and most likely never will have.
