questions about CMS 7.1
Created: 20 Jun 2011 | 3 comments
Hi
I'm new in CMS, I've got few questions and would be glad to find answers quickly:
1) Does CMS supports hardware change tracking? I mean I will be notified if for example memory of PC1 has been changed. Also if the answer is yes I need to know whether I can find out where this RAM goes to (in case of movement)
2) Can we schedule reports based on pivot tables?
3) Can we use WOL for patch management?
4) Can we create multiple criteria filter to select computers to apply a task to them? (for example I need to select w2k3 computers in specific IP range)
Regards and TIA

anybody?
Are those questions so hard to answer?
Most of your answers can be found
very quickly by reading the product documentation linked in the upper right corner.. or here.
1) If you chose to enable history for data classes, then yes (it is not by default, based on the extra size required in the database).
2) It depends on the pivot tables source. If you are referring to IT Analytics, I would say no.
3)Yes, if it is allowed in your environment
4)Yes, you can create multiple filters and combine them into targets

Yes
1. It does usually inventory individual RAM modules but not changes in RAM by default, I don't think. I think if you had Asset Management Solution you'd get the Inventory History so could write your own report to tell you when RAM was changed. Similarly you'd have to write a reprot to tell you where the RAM had gone but that would only work if the RAM modules had an individual identifier that was machine readable.
2. Not sure what you mean here
3. You can schedule a task to wake up machines just before your Patch cycle is due, I'm not sure if that's an option in Patch Management or if you'd have to do it separately.
4. Yes. Symantec recommend you create simple Filters (so one for W2K3 and one for your IP range) then combine them when you create a Target for your Policy or Task. So the Target for the Task would be:
Exclude all Computers Not In...Filter...W2K3
then
Exclude all Computers Not In...Filter...<your IP range>
And then you could save that Target for future use.
