Ralus backup of rsynced data

Created: 10 Jun 2013 | 4 comments

We some file space for our dept on a campus nas. Since we don't manage the nas, we're unable to install the nas agent for BE, so we're rsyncing the data we want to a server with the ralus agent. The is a snapshot folder on the nas with nightly and weekly snapshots, but we aren't rsyncing that.

We've just set this up and successfully backed up the rsynced data over the weekend. The path to the data is \\server\data\nas-backups. I'm trying to do a test restore, but I see a gigantic number of folders under data. These folders have one of 3 names:

One of the folders named nas-backups has a modified date. When I go into it, there are multiple instances of each folder. One of each has a modified date. You get the idea. It's like a Russian nesting doll, and each level takes at least a minute to open. I am guessing that it has something do the snapshotting on the nas, regardless of the fact that we are excluding the snapshot folder.

Any ideas what I need to do to get this to work properly? I'm thinking about rsyncing one of the full snapshot folders rather than the live data.

I am not sure if I understand you correctly. You are trying to copy the data from the NAS to a linux box (is this what you meant by ReSyncing) and then trying to backup that data from Backup Exec using RALUS?

A possible cause of this problem is that you are using a variant of Linux that is not supported.  Check the SCL below that your variant of Linux is supported.

Jaydeep, that is exactly right. I understand the confusion - snapshotting shouldn't be playing any part in this since I'm not touching the nas directly, but I can't think of another explanation for all of the multiple copies.

pkh, the ralus agent is on ubuntu. We're backing up another ralus agent on an identical box that rsyncs content from our web servers, and I have no problems with it.

We're going to try rsyncing one of the snapshots instead of the live data and see what happens when I do a small test backup of that, but still interested in any thoughts you might have about this.

BE only support certain versions of Ubuntu.  If your version is not supported, it may not give the same error for different machines.
