RB2D folders and job configuration

Created: 21 Sep 2011 • Updated: 09 May 2013 | 1 comment

We are planning on implementing a backup system using HP RDX drives using Backup Exec 12.5. Our preferred scheme for these backups is to run full backups on Friday night with four rotating cartridges and differentials Monday through Thursday with a different cartridge every night. From what I've read the most efficient way to do this would be to have the RB2D folder take up most of the drive and have a fairly large file size set for the maximum to minimize fragmentation. My first question is whether this understanding is correct. My second question is how to configure the job(s). Can one differential job run for Monday through Thursday with a scheduled inventory before the backup job, given that the RB2D folders would be different on the four cartridges? Or do we need to have a different job defined for every cartridge, meaning a total of 8 different jobs, one per RB2D folder? The system of media management for RB2D disks and folders for things like this doesn't seem very clear in the documentation to me.

Hi there,

I'll answer some of your questions for you:

1. You can schedule an inventory before a job runs, no hassles. Right-click the device and run through the creation of the inventory, and then schedule to run on x-days at x-time.

2. Best thing for creating differential jobs is to run a policy. This creates the jobs correctly and assigns rules if you have a GFS requirement in place (Daily, Weekly, Monthly).
