Rebuilding and retiring PCs

Being new to the Altiris product suite, I am wondering what occurs to licensing when a machine is rebuilt. If a machine was rebuilt with a different name, does the CMDB intelligently realize that it already has a record for it, and just add some change history, or what?

Furthermore what process do you follow to remove a PC from the licensed pool at the end of its lifetime?

If someone could direct me to the best documentation or offer advice I would be grateful.

Thankyou in advance.

talking about Depolyment Solution or Notification Server:

Deployment Solution and Notification Server uses 2 different SQL databases:

If you want to retire machine in Deployment Solution
:easy to remove a license is by doing "Right Click " on the Computer select the "Advanced" click on the option "Uninstall Agent" that will remove the Aclient Agent only which is with Deployment Solution..

Also set up Deployment solution to delete computers after they ahve been inactive set number of days..

go to Tool\Options click on the "Global" tab

there you have 2 tabs that allow you delete history older than 30 days..or to remove computer older than 30 days..

if you are referring to Notification Server 6.5

You have to set up your database to purge in-active data.

Notifcation Server is where you install variety of different agents to run your computer. before I go to more deep is this what you where referring to?

I purge old computer combination of using the Active Directory Connector to verify what machines my AD has listed.

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks for the heads up regarding retiring PCs.

I was referring to all products generally, from the perspectives of both retiring and rebuliding (either with keeping the same Netbios name or not). I have seen some growth in license usage greater than new machine purchase. Unfortuneately, the business will not provide me resource until next year to reconcile the assets, so I am flapping in the breeze a bit. Once I get some minions, I need to set up a barcoding process to ensure what is in the CMDB matches the real world 99%.

I am still wondering what would happen if you take a machine that has the various agents installed, and you rebuild with a new netbios name: will Altiris realize that it is the same machine guid? Or is there a process of removing the NS/DS agent, rebuild, reinstall agents?

With regard to NS purging, I am very much interested, particularly since I am running out of licences!

Time to read your references :-)
