Hello,

In my test environment, while installing Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 I get attached error message “Configuration failed while attempting to configure services” I have confirmed the remote connections to DB are open; DB is pinging from SMP and vice a versa.

Please let me know if I have missed anything.

    Thank & Regards

    Wert

    Hi,

Is it a clean installation or upgrade from previous release?

Please copy/paste exception from NS or SIM log files.

    Hello Robert

Thanks for your reply, this is indeed a Clean Installation, as requested I have attached the SIM log files

I have found the a.log file under SMP\Logs folder and a.SIM log.txt under SMP\Logs\SIM folder.

    Thanks & Regards

Exception "Specified cast is not valid" usually occurs if DAL method declaration is different than the stored procedure or required stored procedure is not found.

In SIM logs there is a following error:

    <event date="Nov 11 19:10:39 +00:00" severity="1" hostName="SMP" source="Symantec.Installation.PerformInstall.InstallComponent" module="SymantecInstallationManager.exe" process="SymantecInstallationManager" pid="1724" thread="37" tickCount="3033562"><![CDATA[Install failure while installing (Package: Altiris Server 7.0 x64) 7.1.6797 {ef7a185a-4f17-4043-abf8-fc26e9fe149e} http://www.solutionsam.com/solutions/7_1/smp/7_1_mp1_rtm/x64 (in product Symantec Management Platform MP1). Windows Installer API return code: 110]]></event>

    Can you check two things:

    1. That stored procedure "spIsHierarchyManagedItem1" is present in the database after installation has failed.
    2. Windows Event Viewer on this machine to get more details regarding "Windows Installer API return code: 110" error?

    Hello Robert,

Thanks for the reply and information.

I checked for the requested settings and below are the findings:

    1. Yes, stored procedure "spIsHierarchyManagedItem1" exist in the database.

    2. Wasnt able to find an event log regarding the mentioned error message. However, found couple of error in the event viewer. Attached are for reference. Hope that helps.

Request you to please advise / guide further on this.

    Thanks

Since "spIsHierarchyManagedItem1" stored procedure exists in the database, can you copy/paste it's definition and attach content of "%ProgramData%\Symantec\SMP\DAL" folder from NS Server? I want to compare everything on the working environment.

    Thanks in advance.

Your version of "spIsHierarchyManagedItem1" stored procedure is from Symantec Management Platform 7.5, not 7.1 SP2. Please double check that you are performing clean installation.

I would recommend you to revert your 2008R2 server used for SMP installation, delete any "broken" SMP SQL databases and try again.

Also, what was the exact product name and version that you have tried to install? I will double check on clean installation, that correct version of this stored procedure is being installed with the specified product.

    Hi Wert,

Were you able to install now?

    Thanks for checking Robert.

Finally, our attempt of a clean install of Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2b was sucessful with an on box SQL.

We have restarted the installation of Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2b on another test environment with an off box SQL.

Hoping for that as well to complete successfully. Will post back the results.

    Hello Robert,

I tried to install CMS 7.1 SP2b on a off box SQL a clean install and when it was at a point of confirguraing and it failed to install / configure, I have attached the screenshot of the error and Install Logs files, cant figure out what am I missing on this. I also tried to re-configure CMS from SIM again but that too did not help and I get the failed error.

    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Wert,

It looks like you're trying to install ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 above the already installed Symantec Management Platform 7.5. Just to clarify, these two versions are absolutely different and should be used separately.

    error-1_0.jpg

Can you attach SIM Support package (Open SIM -> Settings in the upper right corner -> Create Support package -> Open containing folder -> OK -> Attach created zip archive to this thread or upload somewhere)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Robert,

Referring to screenshot, yes it looks like it is installing some of the old components. However, I definitely rememeber that I followed below steps to perform an uninstall of my old corrupted SMP installation.

    1. Uninstalled all the components using uninstall option in SIM.
    2. Uninstalled Symantec Management Platform and Sollutions from SIM.
    3. Deleted the leftover folder (Altiris) in the program files of the machines.
    4. Deleted all the reg entries of Symantec.

After performing above steps it is considered that SMP is completely removed from the system and hence, I proceeded with this installation. However, it is confirmed in the screenshot it wasnt removed completely. Is there something I may had missed OR is there any other tool or a process designed to uninstall SMP from the environment?

For now, I am building up a new VM and this will definitely have no traces of old SMP so the install should be successfull. Hope, using the same SQL VM (will create new instance at the config window of SIM) would not be a problem?

Would be great if you could please advise on above.

    Thanks & Regards
    Wert

    Hi Wert,

I would recommend to add p.5 to your steps:

    1. Uninstalled all the components using uninstall option in SIM.
    2. Uninstalled Symantec Management Platform and Sollutions from SIM.
    3. Deleted the leftover folder (Altiris) in the program files of the machines.
    4. Deleted all the reg entries of Symantec.
    5. Delete old DB from SQL Server.

Also it would be useful to check the following articles as well:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO93133

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH42647

For now, I am building up a new VM and this will definitely have no traces of old SMP so the install should be successfull. Hope, using the same SQL VM (will create new instance at the config window of SIM) would not be a problem?

If you will have completely clean OS for ITMS and will create NEW database with NEW name on SQL Server, then everything should go fine.
