    I was wondering if someone might be able to help with probably a stupid question.  I have PGP Desktop 9.6.3 installed on Windows XP and I am trying to send an encrypted e-mail using Outlook 2007.  My default keyring has about a dozen keys, some of which are verified and some that aren't. It only seems to be able to find keys that are verified.  I have my policy set to manditory encryption for confidential e-mails.  Any thoughts?

    By default, PGP will encrypt only to keys that are Verified.  When you know that a key really belongs to who it is suppose to belong to, you can sign the key to indicate this, which results in the key being Verified.  This is to avert Man In The Middle attacks, which can lead you to mistakenly be encrypting to someone else's key (which means that the imposter can then read email that you believe is securely transmitted). 

    However, if you want to encrypt to keys whether or not they are verified, you can go to the messaging service in PGP Desktop, and change the default Opportunistic Policy's Encrypt To setting from Recipient's Verified Key to Recipient's Unverified Key.

    If I am understanding your particular use, you will need to set this in the Require Encryption - Confidential policy in addition, or instead of, the above policy.

    Tom, thanks.  That was my problem.  I had recently reinstalled this and I forgot about the policy setting that encrypts to verified or unverified keys.  I appreciate your quick response!

    I am having a similar problem with Desktop 10.1.2 and 10.2.0 running in Window 7 PE with Outlook 2007.  When sending an email to a verified key on my local keyring, I receive the following message from Desktop Notifier: "key not found; sent unencrypted." 

    I did the following to no avail: 1) change opportunistic encryption policy to encrypt to unverified keys, 2) tried to force encryption by placing [PGP] in the subject heading, and 3) manipulated the opportunistic encryption policy to force encryption to that specific key. 

    The key is also registered and verified on the Global Directory. 

    Any ideas?

    If this is only happening to this one key, it sounds like there is something wrong with it.  It might be that it does not have the necessary email address, it might not be self signed, the encryption subkey may be missing, revoked, expired, or a size not suported by PGP.  If you want to post the public key here, or send it to me, I'd be glad to take a look at it for you.

    Tom,

    I have tried various other keys including my own.  If you want to send me your key or if it is on the Global Directory, I will download it try to send you an encrypted test email.

    Is the problem existing with all the other keys you have tried as well?  If so, this particular key is not the problem.  You can click on my user name for this post, and send it thru the forum email or as a forum message.

    I received your message signed and encrypted. 

    The problem with this key: If you look at the encryption subkey properties, you will see that it is not set as being allowed to be used for PGP Messaging.    The owner of the key needs to provide either a new key, or add a new subkey that allows PGP Messaging encryption.

    Another option is for the owner of the key, to just change the subkey's options to include it being available for PGP Messaging, and then redistributing the updated key.

    I checked the subkeys and the encryption key was not set for PGP Messaging.  Once I made that change, the encryption, decryption, and signing worked as expected.  Thanks again.

    I have this issue with PGP Desktop 10.2.0

    I have recieved a public key from a user, then have imported it to PGP.

    Following user's key is on my All Keys key list ("Monika Plichta") [image 1]

     

    The problem is:

    I can import a public key ("Monika Plichta") and see it in the the "all Keys" panel of PGP Desktop 10.2.0 [image 1] along with my other keys but when I try to encrypt a txt file using the "Secure with Key" option the key does not appear in the selection "enter the username or email address of a key" selection box on the "Add User Keys" panel.  The other keys are selectable but not the last one I imported. [image 2]

    Ive tried to sign her key, to export/import it again. Why do the rest of keys figure in the list of recipents below and her not? 

    (I hid the rest of key names with a paint tool )

    I would be very grateful for any help regarding this problem.

    There are numerous possible reasons - if you can post the key here, or send it to me, I could probably easily find it.

    The key needs to have a self signature.  It needs to have a creation date before your computer's set date and time.  It must have an encryption subkey, unless it is a legacy RSA key.  It must not be revoked or expired.  It needs to be a key size that PGP supports.  It may have been created by other software with some aspect that PGP does not support.  It might be corrupt.

    PGP Desktop is seeing this key as an RSA key without an encryption subkey, so will treat this as a Sign Only key.  You will not be able to encrypt to it, but will be able to verify signatures made by the matching private key.

    The only thing you can do is let her know that you need her key to have an encryption subkey.  She can generate a new key for this, or she can add an encryption subkey to her existing key.

    The display is showing who the file was encrypted to.  Since the encryption was not to your public key, you don't have the necessary private key for the decryption.  They need to encrypt to your public key for you to be able to decrypt.

    On a related note one of my colleagues had a hard drive crash recently and re-installed PGP 10.0.1. He can send PGP encrypted emails to me without problem but attempts to send emails to addresses outside our company are failing.

    From Outlook he gets back:

    The only key server configured is the default keyserver.pgp.com one and it seems to be accessible.

    Yes - the key in All Keys is enabled and verified.

    Usually if we're unable to find the key in the local key ring (eg. if we specify a wrong email address) the messages we see in the log are more like this:

    I'm not finding anything specific on this error to what you are seeing,  However, it appears to be Exchange related.  What email software are version are you using - wondering if it is supported by PGP 10.0.1.

    We're using Microsoft Outlook - I'm not sure the exact version my colleague is using but PGP mails to outside addresses had been working fine for him prior to his hard drive crash. I'll check the versions of software he's running to make sure everything is compatible.

    The versions of Outlook we're using look to be compatible with PGP 10.0.1.

    But I've got a new question about this - when PGP is searching the key list for a matching email address, is the search for the email address case sensitive?

    My colleague sent his email to 'Firstname.Lastname@company.com' but in the key list the address appears as 'firstname.lastname@company.com'. This failed but when he sent the email as 'firstname.lastname@company.com' the email got encrypted and went out. It's as if the case needed to match.

    In my case I don't seem to have any issues using email addresses with uppercase or lowercase.

    Is matching the case of the email address a requirement? Or is there some setting in PGP to control whether the case of the email address matches?
