  • 1.  Recovery mode - decryption progress indicator?

    Posted Jan 13, 2015 01:03 AM

I've had to resort to decrypting a drive encrypted with Symantec WDE using a boot recovery disk as the MBR was messed up, and I couldn't get the blue screens to go away during boot.

I started the decryption process hours ago, but I don't hear the hard drive doing anything, there are no progress indicators on the screen.  Just the same gray screen saying it may take a while.

Is it doing anything?  Should I be seeing some form of feedback or progress bar, or something?  Or should I assume it's working and it could take a couple days?

    Hi,

Are you using the Recovery Disk that comes in iso format (bootg.iso)? The bootg.iso image can take considerably more time to complete than it does from within Windows, and once you start it you should not stop it. It depends a lot on the size and speed of your disk, but it really could take a couple of days.

Warning: Use of the recovery disks should be used as the last step when attempting recovery.  Should there be a power loss while decrypting with the recovery disk, the result to the disk could be fatal and non-recoverable. It is also highly recommended to use the latest recovery disk available for the version you are running.

    Thank you for the response.

For an update: I did decide to let it sit for a long time, and after 24 hours, on a 240GB hard drive, it's completed about 30% of the decryption process.

Eventually it did start to show a percentage of completion on screen, but that first percent took almost 2 hours on my machine before it showed up at 99% left to decrypt :)
