    HI,

I ran into a problem when accessing your external (USB 2.5 ') PGP WDE drive. The disk was encrypted by passphrase.

At one point, when you connect the disk to windows 7 when prompted to format the drive was given a positive result, then I realized that to make and cancel the formatting. As a result, PGP no longer ask for the password to my disk.

    When the output from

    Pgpwde-enum

    response

Disk 0 has 0 online volumes:

Request sent to Enumerate disks was successful

    pgpwde - status - disk 0

Disk 0 is not instrumented by bootguard.

Request sent to Disk status was successful

    pgpwde - recover - disk 0 - passphrase ******

after a lengthy inspection sector displays a message

Found backup BGFS record on sector 5

    Recovery failed!

    Operation recover disk failed:

Error code -11984: item not found

Team pgpwde-decrypt - disk 0 - passphrase ****** result also does not provide.

Help restore a very important data - the result of many years

    Thank you!

Did you formatted the disk by mistake?

Probably you deleted partition table. I´m not sure that you can repair that.

You can try to download recovery cd, disconnect all your drives,  connect the external and boot from CD:

    Download here:

You can also try to instrument the disk again.

If no luck, i suggest opening a new case to support

    Please mark post as solution

    Regards

I'll try to drive recovery - based on the results give the answer whether it helped.

About the formatting - when connected PGP WDE external disk, windows 7 defines the file system as a "raw" format and offers, I have not looked at the screen, enters a password and pressed enter, but the window with pgp had been inactive. A window was active windows to the proposal format.

I too have just stumbled onto this, losing a lot of data on a PGP encrypted USB drive.  There are two problems.

    Problem#1.

When a PGP encrypted USB drive is inserted into a windows PC USB slot, WIndows eventually will recognize that PGP Software needs to be invoked to prompt the user for a passphrase and then unencrypt the data.  However, quite often, before one has time to enter the passphrase to unencrypt the drive, windows seems to decide that the USB drive is not normal and needs to be reformatted.  WIndows then takes over and asks if you want to reformat the drive.  If you don't notice it quickly and step in to say no to the request, it goes ahead and reformats it for you anyway...losing all your data on the drive.  This is bad, bad bad of windows to do this.

    Problem #2

There are plenty of utilities available on the net to recover unencrypted data from USB drives that have been accidently reformatted.  There doesn't seem to be any, however,  that will recover data from an encrypted drive.  I think PGP needs to help out here.  Only the PGP folks know what was installed on the PGP drive when it was encrypted that causes the 'enter passphrase' and eventual decryption process to be invoked.  I need to add this back into my USB drive somehow so that I can then get the recovery utilities to look for files on the unencrypted but reformatted USB drive.  .   Surely this is possible.

    Hi Tomaso

First thing, I would disable AutoRun for USB, so when you insert the drive, windows wont access it automatically and wont prompt to format. I think you can change that from registry, you should google.

In order to fix the drive, please follow this steps:

    1. Disable disk protection first: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH161654&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1331225245095
    2. Run data recovery/undelete software, make sure you restore raw data, not ntfs files. BTW, did you quick or full formated the unit?  If full formated, you will not be able to recover data.Thats a fact.
    3. Open cmd and browse to c:\program files\pgp corporation\pgp desktop
    4. Run pgpwde --enum to list disk . USB should be disk 1 if systemdisk is encrypted.
    5. Then run pgpwde --recover --disk 1 to install WDE config.

After this, PGP Desktop should be able

    Please tell if this worked
