  • 1.  Reg key or file that tells LUA what content it has in the Distribution Center?

    Posted Feb 17, 2012 04:40 PM

We have been having a set of repetitive similar issues with LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA), whereby SEP clients cannot see any new AV defs in the LUA.

Today after wiping all content in the secondary LUA (in the high-security domain)  we downloaded new content into the Content Repository. When I try to run a distribution, (to an EMPTY DC) it immediately errors with "No updates are currently available for the products selected in this schedule. "  There has to be a hung file or reg key by which it compares dates. Where is it?

In other words, with all-new content in the Content Repository, and nothing in the DC, it will not run a Distribution!

One LUA is 2.3.0 and one is the latest at 2.3.1. Both run on patched Win 2003 SE 32 bit.  Our LUA purpose is to update some SEP clients that are in a high-security domain.

These installs ran for months without serious issues. Support has not found any cause or cure. I have booted, reinstalled one LUA from scratch, deleted and recreated all Downloads and Distributions, tinkered with settings, repeatedly cleared out all content, refreshed the Symante Product Catalog, etc .etc etc.  The LUA servers are dedicated to this app and have enough resources (except when LUA decides to stop cleaning out old data, and a disk fuills up.).

Occasionally deleting ALL content will let that LUA start working again. More often the only thing that works is just that after one or two or three days, it will just start working again. By working again, I meant that the clients can see and read new defs from the LUA.  When I clear all content, I make sure that the \TempDownloads folder is empty, the Content Repository is empty, and the Distribution Center (DC) is empty.

While it is hard to tell exactly what AV def revision you have in a DC at any time, I do know that the secondary LUA has a new def today (how I know would make this post even longer). ,

We have sent troubleshooting data to Symantec collected while the system was fouled, and they never found anything.

Need some deep info on how LUA works. I closed support cases when things started working, but every time this happens I spend many hours just on fixing LUA.

We need a way to run a Repair on LUA. Add-Remvoe Programs does not work and running the install file does not work.

    Help appreciated.

Man, I don't hink I've looked into LUA as deeply as you have. Unfortunately, the most common response is to repair or re-install LUA and I too am tired of that. I guess you too are running the latest & greatest version of LUA?

As LUA is database driven, I'm not too sure how much is stored in the Registry, but have you looked at the DB itself? I use Database Browser from Portable Apps to connect to the DB.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH102701 is about installing LUA and talks about the various TCP ports in use. To connect to the DB, you need to connect to port 7072. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH93544 is about enabling logging on the LUA DB to help you troubleshoot. Are you complying with the best practices document?

Will try that tool, but I have to download it at home and carry it to the office.

We followed the Best Practices and install docs. When I reinstalled the secondary LUA recently, I installed the latest 2.3.1. Not seeing a difference yet. The other LUA is 2.3.0 and I got it wokring again a few days ago. I was looking for the LUA DB file itself so I could try a built-in (but lesser-known) tool like the SEPM Embedded DB has (dbisqlc.exe).

Will post developments here.   Thank you

Sooner or later every user of LUA will see the need for what Mick2009 describes in the below-linked Idea. Please vote up to display in the LUA, or at least a standalone tool to do the function.
