Reinstalling a Notification Server

Created: 20 Sep 2012 | 11 comments

Hello everybody,

WE have a lot of problems with our Altiris enviroment, we had problems with one server, where was installed the Notification Server (Sym.Management Console) and we had to reinstall this server.

We didnt have problems with the SQL Server and we could install the NS and linked it with the SQL and in appearance it was all ok, but now we are having some problems, and I have a few qüestions:

-Have I re-install the agent of altiris in all the systems?

- There are something that I have to do to have the enviroment running ok?

The main problems we are having are that when I send some task to a PC the task server doesn't get the action, and I cannot complete the job. Like uninstall some antivirus or installing another one.

Any help please!?

The database contains so much of the configuration that the problems may be in the database. You could maybe back up your Software Releases, Policies, Tasks, Reports and Filters and reinstall NS with a new DB. if you use the same name and IP address your agents should just repopulate inventory. Especially if you create an Inventory Policy to run Full inventory 00:00 No repeat.

You don't need to reinstall the agents.

Is your problem with all Task Servers?

Agents will be fine as long as you didnt rename the NS and are on the same domain. Check you have the agent upgrade policies on.

You didnt mention what version of NS or if you had task servers, what network they are on, if this was production or test Virtual or hardware etc etc.

If you are installing a new setup of Altiris CMS and you got errors or issues, learn and start again rather than start broken.

Your question is very general - Task server not executing a task after a new install. Are you familiar with Altiris and what should happen, it is very complicated.

I will explain a little more of my enviroment:

There was two servers: the NS (Notification Server) and the SQL Server, and we had problems with the first one (NS) and we had to reinstall all the server, making a new installation of Win2k8, and all the products of the Altiris. Then we linked the NS with the DataBase of SQL because it was ok.

Then I enter in the Altiris console and in appareance all are ok, I have the tasks, the jobs and almost all the configuration of the previous server.

The problem we are having are that when I try to send a task to a specific computer, the task server takes all the 30 minutes and do not send anything to the client, or at least, the agent do not see anything.

I think, that the agents in the computers are ok, because I can see 887 avaible, and I think that the comunication between Agent and Console are well.

The version of NS is: 7.1.8280. And the agents are in the same domain, we only have one domain, and it is in production.

I know that my question is very general, but i am not very familiar with Altiris, and I dont find clear documentation to help me.

If you need more information about my enviroment, the server, the agents or anything else, tell me please.

Thanks so much for everything!

OK, so i'll be honest, giving a solution to a problem is one thing, but finding the problem as well is a little out of scope for forums. You said you couldn't find good documentation so I think it's really important you sit down and read some of these documents.

There are a lot of steps from entering a job into the console until the client finally does something and if you can understand how the data flows, where the logs are and how all the pieces fit, you might be able to come back with an error log or something concrete for the community to work on.

Good luck!

I'd start again with my task servers. Delete all of them and then rebuild just one and see if it works. If it doesn't fault find from there.

Are you sure that your machines aren't maybe in a maintenance window.  What does the RAAD say on the clients?

I'm sorry, and I know that if I had time to read all the documentation, I can be able to find all the answers to my questions, but we have many work and few time to do it, and I think that here are many people with more knowledge that me, and if you can help me I'll be grateful to you.

Then, where I can see the logs that tell me what happens with the tasks? I suppose there are a directory in the client where it been saved, but where is it?

My main headache is that before the servers downs and could repair, all the tasks and jobs works well, but now not, and I don't know where to find.

Thank you so much.

The easiest way to look at logs on the client is to use the Remote Altiris Agent Diagnostics (RAAD) tool:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO21449

To fault find you need to pick one task, one task server and one client and break it down from there. On the NS you can look at the log using Programs > Symantec|Altiris > Diagnostics > Altiris log Viewer.

Start a task, note the time and check logs on the NS, task Server and Client.

Don't be sorry! OK this is the last I can help with "general fault finding" If you have something specific like an error message open a seperate forum entry.

Here is a list of things to help you start your diagnosing generally.

C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs\ - The agent logs directory on the PC client.

..\Program Files\Altiris\Diagnostics\LogViewer.exe - on the Notification server (should already be a shortcut in Start menu) - this tells you realtime about errors, have it open and maximised when you run things to see realtime info.

-Reading NSE files in the NSCAP share, especially those in the error subfolders

-Use Remote Altiris Agent Diagnostics (RAAD - free tool) to query the client https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/downloads/remote-altiris-agent-diagnostics-20-raadv2

Try this:

1. Start the job

2. Identify where the fault lies

2. Use RAAD to see if the client got the job. (Client error)

3. Review Client logs for errors if it has the job and proceed with searches on error

4. If not, review any NS errors in it's logs. (NS error)

5. If you have or have had a seperate Task Server you may need to check its client logs also.

Hope that helps, if you think its enough answers about general trouble shooting then please mark as the solution.

Very thanks for all the comments, and all the help, the software RAAD is very helpfull for me, and thanks it I can see what are happening with my clients.

Now, I'm having problems distributing new Software, the error reported is something like:

"No licensed computers or targets with licensed computeres were assigned.".

Then I open the Sym.Installation Manager to verify that our licenses are ok, and I can see the capture attached.

I think that the product for distributing software is: "Altiris Software MAnagement Studio", isn't it?

If it is correct, the sim is telling me that only we have 162 computers with License?

How I can make to license the other computers of my organization?

A lot of thanks,

Your screenshot doesn't show licences, have you enough. If you have enough licenses than they should be automatically applied as you roll out the Software Management Solution plug-in.
