  • 1.  Reinstalling SEPM doesnt reinstall the reporting components

I installed SEPM 11.04 on a new 2003 server.  The console functioned fine, we hadnt added any clients yet.  I found out we were going to rename the server so I thought it would eliminate any issues if I uninstalled SEPM and reinstalled it after the name change.

After reinstalling I got the error message "unable to communicate with the reporting component".  Looking at the services I saw it had only installed the SEPM service and the Symantec embedded database service.  It didnt install the Symantec event manager service, settings manager service, or the network access control service.  I tried doing a repair, uninstalling, deleting the "c:\program files\symantec\symantec endpoint protection manager" folder,  rebooting, and reinstalling.  I also made sure the old symantec site was gone in IIS after uninstalling.

Take a look at this document:

Unable to communicate with the reporting component after logging into the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH104777

And see this document if you want to be sure that you have cleaned your system thoroughly enough:

How to manually uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11.0

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH102673

Looking at the services I saw it had only installed the SEPM service and the Symantec embedded database service.  It didnt install the Symantec event manager service, settings manager service, or the network access control service.

That's okay. The services you are missing are from SEP client and not SEPM.

As soon as your SEPM is running, you should upgrade to the current version (11.0.7101 or 12.1.1000). If you don't have to restore a database backup, you can use the current version from the beginning.

    Thanks for your help.

For some reason during the reinstall it didnt fully setup the ODBC connection to the embedded database. I corrected that but it didnt resolve the issue.  I finally tried this suggestion from:

    http://www.deobfuscate.net/?p=172

I set the defaultapppool identity(identity tab) from "network service" to "local system".  Since this page isnt viewable from outside I dont see this as a security risk.
