Relationship between NS 6 and DS 6.9

This issue has been solved. See solution.

We have had Deployment Solution for years and are now running version 6.9 (build 164) on one server. On another server I have installed NS 6 and am demoing Help Desk solution.

I decided to install Deployment solution within NS so I could use the Altiris console. I linked it to the other server and can see the database of computers now in the new one. What I am confused about is what is the relationship between resources and collections of computers in NS and the database of computers that are running aclient in Deployment Solution?  If I want to connect assets to the help desk solution will I need to do the discovery process and install the altiris agent on all the computers? Then I would have 2 databases??????

Also one of the main functions we use Deployment solution for now is remote control. Am I right that I cannot do that from the Altiris Console, but have to run Deployment Solution Console to do that?

Thanks.

Jane

Yeppers, 2 Databases

Solution

Yeppers, there are 2 Databases.

The one for Deployment Solution has a default name of "eXpress" while the one for Notification Server has one called "Altiris".

Do I HAVE to have both

Do I HAVE to have both databases? If not, how do I use each one?

Sorry I am so new at this.

You can remote control with NS

You can remote control with NS, but you will need PC Anywhere in order to have that ability.

How about using Carbon Copy?

How about using Carbon Copy? I see that as an option in NS installations.

Actually PC Anywhere

Is not integrated with NS6. As jfrasier pointed out, Carbon Copy is the default remote control for client systems in Notification Server. Deployment Server also used a form of Carbon Copy, but as Palvaran pointed out they are two separate products. You can link them using Deployment Solution for NS, but that doesn't transfer Remote Control responsibility.

I guess the question is, jfrasier, what are you after? Deployment Server and Notification Server (with Client Managemente Suite) offer quite a bit of cross functional abilities, but are designed for different aspects.

Deployment Server is geared for smaller environments, or for strictly provisioning activities (although a crafty admin can configure it otherwise). Notification Server (with the various management suites) are designed for post install, on-going day to day support. In version 6, you can't natively deploy an image from an NS console, that requires some form of interaction with Deployment Server.

Our Needs

Now we use Deployment Solution for creating and restoring images, usually using boot disks and rdeploy. We also use it extensively to connect to clients remotely to troubleshoot and help our customers.

I have a new boss that wants us to use Help Desk Solution. He also is real big on using Altiris for software package installations. I know you can do that within Deployment Solution but we really haven't done that much with it.

The remote control ability is really important to us. Doing a Windows Remote Desktop Connection isn't the answer because generally we are wanting to watch the customer do something and show us how they are doing it so we can troubleshoot.

Do you have any ideas about how we might proceed.

Thanks.
