Remote Agent Install
Created: 03 Jan 2013 | 6 comments
I am trying to transfer a remote agent to our new Exchange server but it keeps failing on the remote install for the new server.
It's not an authentication issue.
ERROR: Installation failed with error 1603.

- AppHelp dialog canceled thus preventing the application from starting. C:\VxPushRA\RAWSx64\Symantec Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems.msi
I am transferring the agent from a Win Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 To a Win Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010.
I am using BE 11D sp5
I am hoping it's not a version issue where I'd need to upgrade BE to at least 2010.
thanks,
Ken

You would be needing atleast BE 12.5 if i am not wrong!
EDIT: Have a llok here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH70425
As mentioned in the Tech Note, installation of software packages prior to BE 12.5 is hard blocked on Win 2K8 R2.

What about if I did the install from the destination server? (the 2008 Server that I want to install the agent)
As opposed to a remote install?
Or will it not matter, will I'd need BE2010 no matter what?
thx
Local install or remote install, Doesn't matter.
will I'd need BE2010 no matter what?
Upgrading to BE 2010 R3 is a better thing to do for now. Latest is 2012 and a lot changed from 2010 to 2012. If you want to go for 2012, wait for R2 to come out, test it and proceed if you like.

That's what I was afraid of.
Ok, looks like I'm upgrading to 2012.
and I assume my current 11d agents won't work, I'll have to purchase new ones for 2012.
thanks.
Yes, existing agents won't work and you would be needing new licenses for deploying 2012 agents.
If you have valid Maintenance contract you will be eligible for free upgrade. If you have one, contact Symantec Licensing for BE 2012 serials.
PS: Before upgrading to 2012, i would recommend you to install it on a test server and get use to the options that are changed before deploying it in production. Anyways upgrading to 2012 directly from 11d is not possible. Upgrade path would be 11d --> 12.5/2010 --> 2012

You don't have to purchase new agents for BE 2012. You just need to upgrade the licences for your old agents.
There are so much changes in the job structure in BE 2012. It might be easier for you to d a fresh install and then create your jobs from scratch, especially since you have to do a 2-step upgrade.
