Stupid question but my berain is stuttering today...do I require an agent on the media server itself to back it up like my other servers?

On the Media server, Remote agent gets installed along with the core product. No need to explicitly
install remote agent on the media server.

So - technically - I am not using one of my 6 paid licvenses for that box - correct? As you may be able to surmise, I need to backup another box that we cannot afford a new license for and I think I am counting the media server as a purchased license used when I should notbe....thanks!
The license for the remote agent on the media server is bundled in the core product license
itself. So apart from the core product license you will not be using any RAWS license for the
media server.

As already stated above, media server is already licensed to backup up itself as part of core product, however if your media server is running a database such as Exchnage or SQL etc (not including the Backup Exec database) and you want to back those databases up then you will need the appropriate application/database licenses as the core license only covers file system, system state and shadow copy components.
