Remote agents outside domain
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 4 comments
Hi!
I have just installed Backup Exec 11 and ran into a problem with the Remote Agent.
I have several servers that I need to backup using the agent but they are located outside the AD-domain which my backup server resides in.
I have opened up my firewall so that I can access the shares on the servers outside the domain, and I pushed the remote agents to those servers which worked great. (also opened up port 10000 that the agent listens on)
But they dont show up under "Windows systems" in the backup screen. I've tried to add them manually also, but with the same result, They just wont show.
anything I'm doing wrong?
thanks!
/Johan

Does the account BE uses have sufficient permissions on these remote servers?

Try adding their names or IPs in User-defined selections. They should appear if have been properly push installed from the media server.

ahh, hehe, never tried that, thanks :)
I added \\servername to User-defined sections and now they show up, and chatting to eachother nicely over port 10000.
Anyone know if it's possible to now close down the ports for windows file sharing (445,135-139) and only use port 10000 for the communication?

Computers will only show up under Windows Systems if you first go to the remote computer and run Start | Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers | Backup Exec Remote Agent Utility. Select the publishing tab, and add the name of the media server.
As for ports, try setting the port ranges Backup Exec should use by going to the Tools | Options | Network and Security menu in Backup Exec. There is more information on page 400 of the Backup Exec admin guide under the section "Setting default backup network and security options'
