remote selections greyed out - Backup exec 10d
Hello,
Im having a problem that I require some help with. i have been pulling my hair out trying to find a solution. After scouring the forums without sucess, i decided to post a new thread myself.
The media server is a newly installed backup exec 10d, I also setup two other member servers and did not have any problems installing the remote agents on them. i have two other servers that I am trying to install the remote agent on and the install is successfull, but the selections are greyed out.
These two servers that I am having problems with previously had version 10 installed. One had the full version of backup exec installed, which I have since uninstalled. the other had the remote agent version 10 installed. I have uninstalled the remote agents via the registry as per a technote in these forums. I have also tried to push it from the media server and also install locally by copying the rant32 folder. TFirewalls are not on and the servers are listening on port 10000. There are not any errors in the bkupinst.log file and there are not any issues with dns, or wins, etc.. I can ping the media server via fqdn as well, i can browse to all servers(including media server) using the UNC path. The two servers that I am having problems getting the agent to work on are both windows 2003 server. One is a dc/file and print and the other just runs filemaker pro.
On the media server i can add via user defined selections, but when i riht click and select properties it says that the agent is running but fails to report the correct version. The other servers that are working reports the correct version 10d. On the remote agent servers the services is started under the local system account, and the services on the media server are running with an account with adequate permissions.
Sorry for the rather lenghty post. i really appreciate any feedback and advice.

Hello Mike,
Had you rebooted the remote servers after uninstalling the remote agent and backup exec from them? Ensure that the remote agent service on the media server too is running under the Local system account. Is the server seen in the remote selections or isn't seen at all?
Revert with details.

yes I have rebooted the servers numerous times. Both remote agents are running under the local system account, I can see the server in remote selections but the drives and shares are greyed out.
I wanted to add that I noticed that I did not enter the remote agent key under installed options. I entered teh key and can see the shares but now I am unable to select the system state. The selection for system state is not showing up for the server under user defined selections remote selections. i am using an account with sufficeint rights to connect to the server. Any other ideas?
Hello Robert,
- You need to not anly push install the remote agent to the remote servers, but you laso need to enter one emote agent license per remote server being backed up.
- After instaling the remote agent and entering the remote agent licnse key you do not need to backup the server via user defined selections!!
You should now be able to see the remote servers including the system state under remote selections>Microsoft Netwaork.
- Please note that the system state cannot be backed up without the remote agent license.

has the licensing model changed for 10d in terms of teh remote agents?
So if we are backing up 5 servers i need 5 different licenses keys that I enter in teh backup server, then i push the remote agent?
I still need help with this issue.
-the system state selections for the remote server is not listed
-when the server backs up i get the following error:
The Media Server was unable to connect to Remote Machine LINAMAR-SJS2.
The Media Server will fall back on the local agent to try and complete the operation.
Unable to initialize Remote Agent
-the server ends up backing up at 471MB a min which is failrly fast for a dlt 80/160. If the agent isnt initialized why is it backing up so fast???
-if I right click on the server in "user definded selections" and click proprties, it tells me that the agent is installed and running but the version is unknown.
I beleive that I may be on to some kind of bug here. Is there a hotfix or anyhting that I can apply? I have uninstalled and re-installed the agent numerous times, i have rebooted the server numerous times. The remote agent is running under LSA and the credentials that i am using is domain admin.
Hello,
Follow the steps given below and verify results.
In the hosts file of the media server add the server name and the ip address of the remote server and vis-versa.
Let us know if this works.

There is no issue with DNS. I can ping servers by the FQDN and the IP. Anything else i can try?
I'm not sure if you are still having issues (probably not). But I ran into a similar problem and here is what I did to resolve the issue:
Reinstall Hotfix 15
The SP 1 update overwrote the Hotfix 15 version of the beremote.exe file on the media server. This caused the beremote.exe in the ..\Agents\RANT32\ directory to be version 10.0.5520.15 and the Media Server was only 10.0.5520.0
Reinstalling the Hotfix 15 on the Media Server resolved the issue.
Benjamin,
Thanks for the advice! It worked on my installation! I was having the same problem!
