Remote SEPM Console fails to log in successfully

I have been searching these forums all morning without finding a solution to this issue. I open the browser and go the the web page http://<servername>:9090 and successfully install Java from the server (all other versions were uninstalled previously) and make it to the log in screen, so far so good. I attempt to log in and my credentials are accepted, I see the home page briefly and am then returned to the log in screen.

I am able to successfully log into the console locally, this problem only deals with accessing the console remotely. The endpoint protection manager is installed on a Virtual Server running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and the OS. I have tried to log in remotely from both Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows 7 Pro x64 wirth the same results. The Windows Firewall on the server and the remote PC's are turned off, I have verified that a x86 ODBC connection exists on the server and all other functionality of Endpoint Protection on the server functions normally.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be causing this issue?

Thanks,
Mark

You might want to start by checking out this help guide. I will try to update again soon with more specific information:

When logging in to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) Console, the log in process does not complete.

Actually sorry for the double

Actually sorry for the double post but I found another document on the reason this might be happening. According to the document this can be caused by the local GPO not being configured correctly. If you contact support they can help you use the IISDiag tool to make sure that is what is causing the issue. However if that is the problem you will be asked to Repair the installation through add/remove programs, so if I were you I would just try that first and see if it helps.

Thanks,
Grant

Open properties for the

Open properties for the Default Web site in Internet Information Service Manager
Click the Edit button in 'IP address and domain name restrictions' under the Directory Security Tab
Either:
1) Verify "By default, all computers will be: Granted access" is selected with no entries in the "Except for the following:" field or
2) Verify the subnet, domain, or specific IP addresses of clients not showing or clients from which the java remote console is attempting to access is in the  "Except for the following:" field if by default is set deny access.

I tried the preceding

I tried the preceding suggestions without a solution. One thing I did not mention is that:

  • browsing to http://<server ip>:8014/secars/secars.dll?hello,secars results in "The server is not ready for service." being displayed in the browser.

Does not apply in that I get the response "OK" in the browser.

Thanks for the responses so far, any others?

Tried it on the Windows 7

Tried it on the Windows 7 machine and on the XP machine I did a RunAs... and logged in using the local administrators account. Both resulted in no change from the previously described symptoms.

Do you have a proxy

Do you have a proxy configured in IE?
If yes try by removing it.

If not helps
Try clearing the java cache and then reloading the manager remote console again.

In control panel --> Programs --> Java
On the general tab select settings then select delete files then select OK to delete apps
Close the Java console and open a Web Browser and reload the Web console http://sepm:9090

Any solution to this problem?

Any solution to this problem?  Our environment is identical and we see the same problem....logging into SEPM console remotely briefly displays partial 'home' screen, then immediately kicks you back to login screen.

Which version of SEP are you

Which version of SEP are you running? We had a similar issue running MR2 MP1 but once we upgraded to MR4 MP2 the problem went away.

First assure that you are

First assure that you are installed RU5,since it is the only fully compatible version available which is compatible with windows 2008 and windows 7.Also assure that following are disabled in both in client and in server
Control Panel > Windows Defender
Control Panel > Windows Firewall
Control Panel > Folder options > View > Advanced > Simple File Sharing

To respond to each

To respond to each suggestion:

Aravind: No Proxy is set

Jamit: I have installed the most recent available - RU5

Aravind: Defender is disabled, Firewall is off and Simple file sharing is disabled.

Same result as before, Home page flashes briefly and back to lthe log in screen.

Hopefully others will provide more info, Thanks,
Mark

Well it appears that this is

Well it appears that this is most likely an IE Security issue of some sort as when I go to :9090">http://<IP_Address>:9090 using Firefox the applet installs and works normally. Seems a little odd to me as I've already lowered all security to the lowest setting for the Intranet Zone as well as having added the server to the Trusted Sites Zone with the lowest setting. A mystery to me but at least I have it working.

Thanks Again for all the suggestions,
Mark

we are also running RU5.

once I uninstalled the SEPM console from my Win7 x64 machine, added "localhost" to IE8\Tools\Compatibility View Settings and used the FQDN of the server to reinstall the console, it started working.
