  • 1.  Remove Dell Management Console From SMP 7.1 SP2

    Posted May 24, 2013 10:22 AM

I have asked this before and when I call support I get the runaround but does anyone know a good way to remove the Dell Management Console from the SMP? It was installed in the past by mistake and looking forward to 7.5 we don't need it or want it, never have. I've called Dell and their support told me its a Symantec issue and I've called Symantec and they say that its either a Dell issue or they can't help. Any recommendations? Would a migration to a new server and new DB make more sense and simply exclude any Dell components?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Refer Symantec support to "Dell Solutions and the Symantec Management Console"

"Question: I no longer want to use Dell solutions or I see issues after installing them or I uninstalled Dell solutions and now see issues occurring elsewhere in Altiris. How can I successfully remove these from Altiris?

Answer: Use Symantec Installation Manager to remove all Dell solutions and components. If there were issues caused by any Dell solutions, this should resolve them. If not, please contact Technical Support to obtain an special clean-up script and reference KB TECH159959."

Although, if it's not too painful, a rebuild when you go to 7.5 will clean lots of stuff up.

That's where I got caught. I had called, referenced that tech article and was told that it wouldn't work on 7.1 SP2. I can certainly wait until 7.5 and migrate to a new DB, was planning on it anyway, just thought that while I still had time on my hands I would try to remove it so I could just do an upgrade to 7.5 to try to limit total downtime.

A couple of years ago when I called support with help for this I was given scripts with an explanation starting

"Since the TECH159959 is not validated with the SMP 7.0 MR4, the following manual steps are recommended for the clean-up."

Perhaps they've found those scripts don't work.

This all leads me back to the original concern...is there really a way to do this? I've seen this article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH167462 which makes me nervous. I may just have to wait until 7.5 and just do a migration if there isn't a nice way to do this.

That would be my suggestion. When I did a 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade I used a new install and the software migration tool - it's a good way to both clean up and to migrate in a more leisurely fashion than a big bang type upgrade.
