  • 1.  Remove old key and reinstall new license key

    Posted Mar 05, 2012 01:37 PM

Hi. We had a temporary PGP Desktop license on my co-workers computer. Our company purchased a new license with maintenance for her computer and we installed it this morning. However, i think the new PGP Desktop version 10.2 may still be using the old license key. No where asked for us to input the new License Key (28 digit). What can we do now that we've already installed the software? Is there a way to remove the old key and add the new key?

I also will be downloading the software on my new computer in a week or 2. She has a new license and mine is an upgraded license. We will be using the same License Key, according to the purchase order. Since we will be sharing this key, will we encounter any problems when i download the software (a different serical number will be selected)? I will need to enter this new key also, but like i said before, i didn't see a spot to enter it at.

Please view a copy of my purchase order, with x'd out Serial Numbers and x'd out License Key.

In PGPtray, select About PGP Dekstop, click License, click Change License.

I'm surprised that you are told to use the same license key on two computers, but if that is what it says, you would enter it the same way if you are not offered the option when you install PGP.

If these are managed client (using PGP Universal server) probably license was already deployed to all the clients. This is a transparent processs.

If standalone client, you can change/check your license in Help menu, License. (if change license is grayed out, thats because managed client and should not worry about).

Anyway..are you having specifc issue? If all is working, then your license is ok.

Well, that worked. It allowed me to add that license key. I guess I don't need to do anything else, right?

Yes, the purchase order i referred to earlier is actually called the Symantec License Certificate. It contains my order, with the 4 serial numbers and the 2 keys, which are identical to one another. When i get my new computer and i install this new version of PGP Desktop on it, hopefully it will let me use that same key.

I have another question. In my Documents, i have keyrings in a folder-the public key and secure key. Do i do anything with those? They were from the temporary install.

You should not have a problem on the new computer.

Keyrings are left behind when you uninstall PGP, so that a new installation can automatically find and use them.  When you generate a new key, it will use those keyrings.  When you import someone's public key, it will be added to your public keyring.

We didn't uninstall the old PGP. The sales consultant at Symantec told me not to. Actually, I just read her email again and she said I should be able to put the new license key into the trial PGP already installed and be good to go. I didn't remember she said to do that. We installed the new one instead. Oh well. It seems to be working fine. LOL!

Do you recommend we go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it if we can find it there? Or should we just leave well enough alone?

    Thank you by the way.

It is correct that using the license on the Trial would have been fine - it is only the Trial license that makes it Trialware, and changing the license would have taken care of that.  There is no need to uninstall what you have.  When you update to a newer version in the future, there is also no need to uninstall the old - installing the newer version will automatically uninstall the old version for you, but your keyrings, messaging services, and preference settings will be retained and used in the newer version.
