Removing duplicate assets from old NS
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 2 comments
I have moved our NS over to new hardware leaving the helpdesk behind on the original server. To transfer the assets to the new server, I simply changed the url settings using the configuration options for the altiris agent. This works a treat but I now have a problem in that I need to clean out assets from the original NS that have transferred over to the new NS server. I need to do this as I will be using inventory forwarding to forward up the asset inventory from the new server to the old NS to allow the helpdesk staff to attach assets with calls.
I can simply purge everything (either delete or at least retire) on the original server but this will purge things like laptops which don’t always appear on the network regularly and pcs that have been switched off for a while. Short of cross referencing everything that appears on both servers and manually deleting from the original server I’m not sure what else I can do. This would prove quite a task as we have around 8,500 clients.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can clean out the duplicate data leaving intact laptops/pcs etc which haven’t transferred so they can be investigated?

Here is an idea
This is what I can think off out my head.
Create a collection from the report which shows which systems haven't contacted the NS in X days, that would indentify the inactive systems.
Run a report based on model (add all laptop models and exlude the ones not in the model list), that would identify all laptops.
Create a new collection of all managed systems and exclude the collections created earlier.
This would indentify the ones you want to delete.

Merge Assets
Assuming NS 6.5,
If you go to View>Configuration>Server Settings>Notification Server Infrastructure>Merge Computers>Merge Computers with duplicate names
This will allow you to merge those computers into one.
Another option is to run this report:
Reports>Notification Server Infrastructure>Agent>Altiris Agent Deployment>Duplicate computer name
There is another report in that same folder for duplicate MACs. This report will let you see all the duplicate computer names and delete them.
Personally, I think merging is the better option.
