  • 1.  Rename Server 2008 R2 with Configuration Task

    Posted Jul 20, 2010 01:01 PM
I created a configuartion task to rename the server, join the domain and add TCP/IP settings. This works when I clone Windows Server 2003. But when I restore a Server 2008 R2 image, it doesn't do anything from the task. How can I rename my computer to a name when restoring Server 2008 R2?

Would it be fair to say that the task works on 32 bit systems but not on 64 bit systems?

I am unsure if that is the case or not. Server 2008 R2 is only 64 bit. We do not have any 2003 64 bit systems to clone.

As I am unfamiliar with the operation of the configuration task you are using to rename the server, all I can suggest is that you look into this task and check whether it is running as a 32 bit process or a 64 bit process when it runs on your Server 2008R2 build.
The ComputerName is actually held in the registry and on a 64 bit machine, it will be in the 64 bit registry - which is not accessible to a 32 bit program.
This may also be a good time to ask you which version and build number of GSS you are using.

I am running GSS 2.5.1 with console version 11.5.1.226.

I am unsure if it is running as a 32 or 64 bit process because I have no idea when that configuration task runs during the clone task. The task steps I have selected are Clone, DeployAnywhere & Configuration. Under config I can set the settings for the computer IP, Name, DNS, Domain. None of them work.

My assumption is that it would run as a sysprep at first boot and insert the settings at that time. This is what happens when we use Microsoft Hyper-V to clone servers and insert the same set of settings.

Do you use the sysprep options when you take the image?  Ghost does it's rename at the backend using a ghost tool rather than with sysprep at the front of the image boot up.

I think EdT might be on to this with the 32bit 64bit.    I hadn't worked in the 2008r2 with ghost so I can't say the exact behavior but have seen 64bit systems behave differentlly in other situations.

    Cheers.
