Renaming Components and Moving Files between Components

Created: 15 May 2013 • Updated: 16 May 2013 | 3 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have noticed in some of my Wise Packages, that some of the Components have multiple unrelated files in them. If i wanted to split these out into separate Components manually (so i can se the 'Leave installed on uninstall' option one 1 file only) , is it just a matter of right-clicking the Component pane, selecting 'New > Component', and then dragging the file from one component to the new one, then setting the File Key Path ?

Is there anything else i should be aware of, other than what is documatented here?

Also, is it safe to rename a Component?

First of all you can configure the "rules" to specify one file per component which will save you some of this hassle.  Bear in mind that changes made in "Installation Expert" will automatically update all the tables involved, but if you make changes in Setup Editor, then you need to make all the necessary changes yourself.

Consequently, if you create a new component, you need to make sure that the component is added to the FeatureComponents table so that it is associated with one of the features.

If you rename a component, then you need to ensure that the FeatureComponents table entry is similarly renamed.

I suggest you run the table check option (F4 from the setup editor/tables view) before and after making changes so that any inconsistencies are shown up and you can fix them.
