Replace Sylink SEP 12 RU2

Created: 05 Apr 2013 • Updated: 10 Apr 2013 | 10 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

Replacing sylink.xml on SEP 11 MP7 was so much easier and straight forward because you simply stop the smc.exe service, replace the sylink.xml file in a directory, and then restart smc.exe.

Replacing sylink on SEP 12 RU2 is very complicated. I cannot find the directory where sylink.xml belongs. And when I attempt to "Import" the communications settings on the SEP 12 RU2 Client, nothing happens.

HELP!!!

Are you using it from the SEPM or replacing manually on one client?

If just one client, sylinkdrop.exe already comes in the SEP client install folder and you can run from there to import.

Default Location of the Sylink.xml file for Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 clients:
(Note: Be sure to configure Windows Explorer to show hidden folders.)

Windows Vista/7/2008/2008 R2: Drive:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\Data\Config

Windows XP/2003/2003 R2: Drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\Data\Config

Do the client have a password in place to replace sylink?

Brian,

I am manually trying to replace the sylink.xml.

I stopped the symantec service, and I keep getting error, "Cannot move sylink: Access is denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"

I logged in with administrator account as I always did when we had SEP 11 RU7 MP1 .... help!

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.2015.2015\Bin and run sylinkdrop.exe frome there. Input the new sylink.xml file

Hello,

This behavior is expected. In SEP 12.1, Tamper Protection prevents direct modification of Symantec files.

Work on the steps provided in this Article:

Cannot manually copy Sylink.xml into a Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 client. Access is Denied.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH165321

Hope that helps!!

you need to use sylink drop for SEP 12.1 ru2 or else use the CDW as mentioned in the above article.

Also disable Tamper protection before changing sylink file.
