Replacement for Rapid install packages

Created: 11 Oct 2011 | 2 comments

Using altiris 6.9 sp5 with windows 7. As we all know(I think), the old rapid install packages do not work on windows 7.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that would be similar. I am not really looking for an msi packager but something comparable to a RIP.

RIP is gone because it was a messy way of capturing an application.  You received all sorts of "noise" in the package that then got rolled out every time you sent it (Altiris Agent GUID problems, extraneous registries and files, random large files that happened to change during capture, etc).

There is not an Altiris program that performs the same function.  Your options for deployment are going to be leveraging the Software Library in Software Management or using Wise Studio to do advanced packaging that can't be accomplished with scripts and command lines in software resources that you've uploaded to your Software Library.

As a long-time user of Altiris Deployment Studio, I must say, among the features no longer available, I will probably miss RIPs the most (followed closely by the loss of the DS remote control feature).  RIPs Worked fantastic for us.  Very rarely did we ever have any problems with RIPs, and over the years, we accumulated hundreds of them that we could roll out instantly if needed.  Such a shame that this easy-to-use and very valuable feature was removed without a decent replacment.
