  • 1.  Report Builder Documentation

    Posted Sep 17, 2014 07:35 AM

Hello all.  We are starting to have our IT community ask for specific reports and want them to be able to build their own but they do not have SQL experience.  Does anyone know of any documentation around using Report Builder in 7.5 that would serve as a guide to those needing to build reports but do not have SQL experience?

    Thanks!

I have not seen a guide or documentation that relates to the Report Builder extensively enough that someone with little to no SQL experience can follow. I too would be very interested in this.

IMHO...it is almost easier to learn the basics of SQL, and have them create this straight through SQL (giving them read only access of course). Report Builder is nice, but extremely slow combined with lack of sufficient documentation.

    Hi jms97,

I scanned through the documentation and found the following links that could give you some leads:

I am not sure if these will answer your question, but I will investigate further and let you know.

    Hi jms97 and dnoah_CMHK

I seached through my Archiv and found something that may fit your needs. The Document explains how to use the Report Builder in SMP 7.0 but it should also work for SMP 7.5 with minor changes.

    Hope that helps

Thank you Network23. This is actually pretty decent. I only skimmed through it, but I will try out the exercises later today. I personally create all my reports through SQL. Although, it would be nice to give a manual (for lack of better words) to one of staff that may need to create custom reports. I dont expect anything advanced, but I am sure we can all agree that the Report Builder leaves a lot to be desired in terms of speed and functionality.

Thank you kedar_k. The 2nd link for the audit report using Query Builder is much closer to what I think me and the OP were alluding to. Im sure most Altiris Admins have access to their SQL boxes, but I would hate to see built-in functionality go to waste. Query Builder can have its uses especially for people that do not have access to SSMS. Im sure a lot of hours went into building this functionality, and it is ashame that Symantec failed to create documentation for it.
