Hi everyone, is there a way within CMS7 to report on how often applications are used and for what length of time they are used for?  We would also like to know the idle time of the applications since someone could have opened the application in the morning but never used it all day.

Thanks,

Deryck

Yes, you have to utilize the application metering

plug-in, which is now included with inventory solution. You can manage\track the start and stop of an application (as well as deny usage). There are also reports that provide the usage information to you.

Does this include idle time?

OK, thanks for your help on part of it, but does it include or can you customize it to report on idle time of the application?

Thanks,

Deryck

I don't think so

this would be difficult to measure with this tool, as it is very 'event driven'. You can get total run time ( a complete list of the reports is here), but since start and stop events are sent only when those events occur, specific idle times would most likely be a guess by looking at the peak CPU\memory usage stats.

Differences between "metering" & "usage"...

Application Metering may actually be misnomered. Application Metering tracks application execution, not actual usage of the program itself.

This means I could launch Word 25 times from my computer and close it 25 times as well but it does not mean I actually used the product.

The assumption is if the application is being launched/executed then the end-user is using the app which in turn translates to it being "metered".
