  • 1.  Reset Firewall Rules to Initial Defaults?

    Posted Apr 22, 2015 11:44 AM

We have a Windows server machine on a small network running SEP SBE 12.1 as a client.  This server has been managed by someone else for the last year or so.  We are now managing this server again.  The former administrator created a hodge-podge series of firewall rules in SEP that are not needed.  Is there any way to reset the firewall rules to their original state (the way they were when the SEP client was first installed on the server)?  We would like to remove any firewall rules that have been added and just have the "default" rules active that were initially there when SEP was installed.  Otherwise we have to go through all of these rules one-by-one and try and determine which ones were added last year and remove them, without having a way to see which rules are additions and which ones were supplied by Symantec.

Thanks very much for any assistance you can offer with this question.

Go to Policies > Firewall > Add a Firewall policy.

This new FW policy should match the Symantec default settings. It can be assigned to all groups that need it.

Just create a new firewall policy. It will be the default one created by Symantec.

Thanks for your suggestion, Greg and Brian.  I think we have an SEP version difference, though.  We are using Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 Small Business Edition on the server.  In addition, the only SEP component installed is the unmanaged client.  There is no "Policies > Firewall > Add a Firewall Policy" option (at least that I can locate) in the SEP SBE unmanaged client.

Please let me know if I am missing/overlooking something here.

So there is no SEPM and you're running just an unmanaged client? Are you planning to make it managed?

Correct, we are just running the unmanaged SEP client.  The network is very small (six workstations, one server), so I doubt that we will add SEPM.  The SEP client has worked well on the server, and the workstations all use Norton Internet Security.

To reset the default set, you would probably need to reinstall the NTP component or just do a reinstall of the client when using unmanaged.

You can then export the policy later for safe keeping.
