Reset Tape properties/flags/total capacity
Created: 07 Feb 2005 | Updated: 22 May 2010 | 2 comments
I have number of tapes that were used on another site, but no longer required there, still very new (<12 mths old)
The tapes have 20G/40G uncompressed/compressed capacity. There is obviously left over data, but I can't find way of clearing the tapes. Quick erase and re-labeling does not help. Within media tab all the tapes report total capacity of 16M only! How do I format, clear the tapes to be able to use them in my media sets.
Creating new media sets and moving the tapes there does not help either.
Thanks in advance,
Filip

Until the tape has been used to the end one time, BackupExec really doesn't know the capacity of the tape.
Label it, so that BackupExec knows about the tape, then just use it in a backup job.
Also be aware that you will probably NOT get 40GB on any of these tapes. 2:1 compression is a marketing thing, not an engineering thing. I usually figure on about 1.3 or 1.4:1 compression

Thanks Ken, this certainly put me on the right track.
