Restore does not show any restore catalog choices

Using Microsoft Small Business Server ver 2000 and BE ver 8.0 having no problems reported with daily backups. However attempts to restore from tape state that tape must be cataloged first. However, when attempting to run catalog routine, routine completes in less than one minute and log reports that tape is already cataloged. However, no choices are availble when attempting to restore.

It sounds like the catalog file might be corrupt. Try one of the following:

1. Open Restore Selections, and open the Media View. Once you locate the tape, right click on the TApe and choose delete. Then recatalog your tape.

2. Click on the Device Tab, and right click on your tape. You will see a Media ID. Once you have that, open Windows Explorer, and browse to your catalogs folder. All the file names will be the GUID's of tapes. Locate the Media ID of the tape you're trying to catalog/restore from and rename/delete it. Also, delete any *.tmp, *.fdd, and *.sm files. After that takes place, catalog the tape again.

3. If neither of those work, stop the Backup Exec services, rename the Catalogs Folder to Catalogs.old, and then start the services. Once that is done, catalog the tape again.

Thanks for your quick response. However, even after stopping the Exec services, renaming the Catalogs Folder, and forcing a new Catalogs fodder upon restarting services, and creating a new tape catalog, the problem remains the same.

Specifically, under the Restore Selections Tab, and attempting to select items to restore, only "none" is available. Using the Media Tab, and right clicking on the cartridge label, and selecting restore, the system returns a message box stating "The selected media was not found in this catalog. You must first catalog the media." However, if I right click and choose catalog instead, it runs the routine 100% and shows it as "successful", but still only shows "none" as a choice under the Restore Selections Tab.

Any additional suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You need to inventory before you catalog.

But the most importatnt thing is that the previous advice didn't tell you to delete BETOPCAT.IDX when you deleted every thing else. That is, of course, the index of the catalogs (the U01 files, and has a tendency to become corrupt.

Thanks. That did it.

The previous advice had me rename the catalog directory creating a new one which would include brand new index files also.
