  • 1.  Restore from hidden partition

I am using SGSS 2.0 and I want to restore an image that is on the client's computer in a hidden partition. I'm using the console and I created a task(clone) to do it and also created an image configuration. The problem is as my partition is hidden when the task starts i got an error that pops that it cannot find the image. It sems that the console checks before to proceed if the path exists and don't want to go any further. So my question is how to do it in this case cause I have to keep that partion hidden. Thanks!

    Hi Radeonized,

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this at the moment. Since the dirve indexes could change between Winodws and DOS, Ghost try to access the image while in Windows and create an identification using many parameters. Currently, only way to access the image is either using drive letter or the volume label - but both of them are not available in a hidden partition.

One alternative is to store the image in the Windows partition instead of the hidden parition. You may be aware that Ghost can clone partition or a disk using an image stored in the same partition or the disk (feature is called client staging area). If the image is protected using NTFS permissions, unauthorized accesses could be blocked.

Other option is to keep the image in hidden partition, but running Ghost using the command execution. This is easier if you do not need to do configurations after cloning the disk. If the image is unique to the machine, there is no issue of having the same computer name. Even configurations could be applied by running ghconfig after cloning, but it is bit of work. If you would like to investigate this and need more info, please let us know.

Before creating an image of new machines, I partition them with a second partition using 15% of the available disk space. I.e. a 40 MB drive will be split into a 36 and 5, Rounded numbers).

Then before I run Sysprep I use the Windows XP GPEDIT.msc from the RUN box.

Under the "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Explorer" folder I hide the D: drive from the user.

The D: drive is used to store the Image created with a task from the Ghost Console.

Most of our users are not Windows savvy enough to find the drive using the Windows Explorer so this solution works for us.  If they do happen to happen to find the drive all they see is a Ghost image file.
