When trying to restore individual messages in an Exchange (2003) mail box, do I need enough free diskspace on the Backup Exec server to store the whole Exchange database? When I try to restore a message (3 kb), the restore job runs until the temporary storage area uses all of the free space on the server (12 GB) then fails with a "not enough disk space" error. From any documentation I read, this temporary space must be local and I cannot redirect this to another server with more room.

Yes,the staging location needs to be a local NTFS volume for restoring from GRT based backups. If you do not have enough space at the default location, you can change the location to a local drive or volume with enough space by going to TOOL>OPTIONS>RESTORE
