restore to new server - what about Windows licensing, will it work?

Created: 07 Mar 2013 • Updated: 07 Mar 2013 | 4 comments

Hi,

I have BE 2010 R2 on a Windows 2008 R2 server.  I am going to replace the server.  I have the Intelligent Disaster Recovery option available and I intend to use that and boot the new server with it.  I am wondering what will happen as far as Windows Server 2008 is concerned when it is running on different hardware.

1) Will it run at all?

2) Will the Windows OS license be valid still or do I need to do something special to deal with the move to new hardware?

Thank you,

Bill

There is a very high possibility that when you use IDR to restore the server to the new hardware, it is not going to boot up because of incompatible/missing drivers.  You would probably have to load the OS and install the applications on the new hardware manually and then use BE to restore the data.

For the Windows licence, you got to check with Microsoft.

For BE, just uninstall all the licences on the old hardware and install it on the new hardware.

Thanks, PKH.

I thought the IDR had the capability to restore to different hardware.  Is there something else in Backup Exec (some other feature) that does that?

The SDR feature (IDR replacement) of BE 2012 is capable of restoring to dissimiliar hardware.

Thanks.  I'll check the Help for my version and see what it says about IDR.
