Restoring Exchange mailbox folder

Created: 29 Nov 2012 | 3 comments

I'm trying to restore a folder from a mailbox, which is on a duplicate backup tape.  I have catalogued the tape.  The folder is approximately 60MB.  The restore job is in the state of "Staging" and the byte count is at 40GB.  I feel like it's staging the entire mail store before it will restore this folder.  In the past I've been able to quickly restore single emails or mailbox items quickly as if doing a file restore, although it has been from the disk backup.  Is this the way it works when restoring from a duplicated backup tape?  Any help with understanding this process would be appreciated.  Thanks...

Hello,

Take a look at this document. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH48668

If you need to restore from tape you should run a duplicate job back to disk.

Insert the tape containing the required Exchange backup sets into a tape drive.
On the menu bar, click File, and then click New > Duplicate Backup Sets Job.
Click Duplicate existing backup sets.
Click OK.
Select the Exchange backup sets that you want to duplicate.
On the Properties pane, under Destination, click Device and Media.
In the Device list box, select a backup-to-disk folder.
Click Run Now.
After the job completes, run a restore job to restore the individual public folder messages from the Exchange backup sets that are duplicated in the backup-to-disk folder.

My backups go disk to disk, then duplicate to tape.  From what I'm reading, the tape duplicate has to be staged to disk first before it can restore using GRT.  Do I understand this correctly?  Also, if I need to do a second restore job (first is a test restore), will it have to stage to disk again, or is it already there?

Yes it sounds like youve got it.  You just need to make sure you have enough space to stage the tape duplicate to disk. It will not need to stage again.  Please see this how to that explains step by step: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/restoring-exchange-or-individual-mailboxesitems-using-backup-exec-howto

Hope this helps
