? Which version are you

?
Which version are you running, and which version do you want to restore from?
I have successfully restored BEWS 11D data using BEWS 12.5, so I know that works.

Restore

Sorry, had to switch browsers. Trying to restore with 12.5 from tapes made with 9.1. Backup and restore working in 12.5 It asks to import tapes from old version. When done, the requested restore will run until cancelled, never finding anything. The drive is alternating between seeking and idle, occassionally indicating a read. No error messages, nothing in event viewer. Running on a W2k workstation, with most recent nic drivers and driver for scsi card.  Note: the upgrade was 1 stage, 9.1-11D-12.5.

When you catalog the tape,

When you catalog the tape, are you able to browse the contents?
Have you tried to duplicate that job to disk and then restore from there?

Hi

Please be sure that you can catalog the tape and you are getting a byte for that . Id not you can try putting the tape in restired media nd delete it , restart the services then run an Inventory .

Also be sure that you Library/Tape drive can read the old tapes , I mean to say something regarding DLT  tapes with LTO Libraries etc .

Note: If this post provides you with a solution don't forget to mark the discussion as solved.

Solved (sort of)

At the suggestion of Symboy, I succeeded with the following procedure:

Move the media containing the backup set (from version 9.1) to retired media.
Delete the media.
Restart all services.
Reinventory the media
Catalog the media.
Run a test restore, success.

While this works and assures me that I can restore from archived backups, in the case of some large backup sets that I have (up to 1.2TB spanning 3 LTO3 tapes) it takes the time to restore a few files from 15-20 minutes to 3-5 hours to allow the time to inventory and catalog. Is there any other way that is not so time consuming? Why is this procedure necessary?
