Restoring Image on Dell OptiPlex 380

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a master image created with a Dell OptiPlex 780 that I've been successfully using on various models such as OptiPlex 745 and 755's.

This is my first attempt at making it work on a Dell OptiPlex 380.  I'm familiar with the usual problems of incorrect storage or network drivers, so I double checked all of this prior to my attempt and I have all the necessary drivers already included in my Ghost Boot CD.

What happens is that the attempt to restore the image goes well, by allowing me to actual restore the image, so the NIC drivers are not the problem since I'm connecting to my GSS correctly and the image is being transferred through the network and applied successfully.

The problem seems to be with either the storage or chipset drivers, so I went back and added those to my Ghost Boot CD as well with no luck.

The image goes on, I reboot the workstation, I see the Windows XP logo as it's booting the OS, then it goes to the black screen with options to run Safe Mode, Boot Normally, etc. but no BSOD.

Regardless, if I select Safe Mode or Normal windows start it continues to reboot the OS and come back to this black screen...an endless loop.

I'm not sure what's causing this since I've been through this before and it's always either a storage controller or chipset driver which I've already updated.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...thank you.

Use deploy anywhere

Try using Deploy anywhere feature as you are restoring image across different hardware platforms.

Please refer to the following link for using Deploy anywhere from your Boot CD:

Do you have the correct SATA

Do you have the correct SATA driver, or have you tried setting the system bios to "Compatibility Mode" for the hard disk?

One way of checking that you have the correct drivers is to use them with an installation CD for the operating system to configure a manual O/S install and see if it still boots OK.

After speaking with Symantec

After speaking with Symantec support, I was reminded about the steps of using Deploy Anywhere with the Boot CD which I've done before.

So, doing this I identified the driver that was missing and I'm in the process of adding it to my Ghost Boot CD via the Ghost Boot Wizard process.

As for the compatibility mode for the SATA in the BIOS, this model of OptiPlex doesn't have that option but the Symantec tech tried to walk me through that as well.

I'll post back if this works since I have a feeling it will...I just forgot about this extra step when restoring an image onto different hardware...that although the Ghost Boot CD included the Deploy Anywhere database I wasn't using it after the image restored...I rebooted the workstation prior to re-target process.

Retargeting Failed

Well, downloading the correct driver for the Intel 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controller driver proved to be a challenge.

I finally got one to download and added it to my Ghost Boot CD via the Ghost Boot Wizard but the retargeting still fails and it continues to tell me that it cannot find the "intelide.sys" file.

Anyone else experienced this mysterious missing file?

Problem Resolved

Ok, I resolved the problem.

I had originally downloaded the file intelide.sys which was also hard to find but since the Symantec tech told me that the error was coming from the fact that I didn't have the correct driver for the Intel storage controller I didn't bother with it.

Come to find out that I did have the right storage controller driver in my Ghost Boot CD all along I just forgot to retarget it after the image was put on the workstation.

But even after that the error for the intelide.sys was still there, so I copied it to a USB drive, copied it to the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder, retargeted the workstation once again and it worked like a charm.

This is the first time I ran into a "intelide.sys" file was missing, so I'm not sure if it's part of this new Intel 82801GB/GR/GH controller or what...either way...problem solved and I was able to deploy master image onto the OptiPlex 380 successfully.
