    Posted Feb 03, 2011 02:22 PM

I no longer have symantec version 10.1.5000.5 on my computer, however, when I right click on any desktop icon the pop up window for windows installer
comes up and says; "The feature you are tying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.... enter an alternate path to a folder
containing the installation package Symantec Antivirus.msi." If I click on the X twice then the windows installer box goes away and life goes on.  The Symantec antivirus name is in the add/remove folder but in name only. If you try and remove the name then the windows installer box pops up again. It basically is telling me that I can't remove something that is not there. I never put this antivirus program/version on my computer.   My daughter's boyfriend at the time (they both attended the same college) put it on. This symantec antivirus program 10.1.5000.5 was distributed by their college to the students. The windows installer pop up box is more of a nuisance then anything else.   I can left click on the desktop icons without any problems.  My virus protection is now microsoft essentials on my computer.

I read online that microsoft ulitilies would clean it up but that product no longer exists. I have contacted Microsoft and Dell and they both can't help.I kept hearing that I needed to go the provider which is symantec to help me fix this issue.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a manual uninstall document for SAV 10.1. Note the information to remove all traces from the registry.

Remove SAV complete using manual removal instructions or call symantec and get Cleanwipe utility.

Otherwise, you can always call Technical Support and ask for the tool named CleanWipe. This should solve the problem once and for all.

I am not sure support is going to give out the tool if this system is not under a support contract.

Here is the number if you want to give it a try.

VKalani, That tool has been removed from the Microsoft site.

While the Windows Installer Cleanup utility resolved some installation problems, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. Because of this, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center.

I would not even think of downloading the tool from a non-Microsoft site. Beware of tools from non-trusted sources. That goes for the Cleanwipe tool as well.

This may be related to the User account rights and permissions.

If this issue does not happen when logged on to the system as the Local Administrator, then you now know that it's a rights issue.

In summary, when the user right clicks on a file, Symantec will briefly interrogate the file (Not scan).  In order to effectively accomplish this, Symantec has to review registry settings.  If Symantec does not have rights to those registry keys (And file locations too possibly.), then MSI is called to fix the apparently broken Symantec install.

If this is true, then discuss what security policies and or GPO's may be affecting the User rights.

Ultimately, the Symantec install may indeed be broken also and require an uninstall and re-install.  Then the Cleanwipe/Uninstall suggestions above are very useful.

    Good luck.

Please take a back up of the registry.

Remove the following registry key, if it exists:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\9526CFE08DA32DC4CB754D39A75FCCE0
