Hello, folks. Need your help.

Trying to add robotic library to BE2012 but have no ideia what to do.

I have Windows Server 2008 R2, 2 devices HP storageworks 1/8 g2 920 ultrium.

After installing BE 2012 noticed that have two Robotic librares and slots but there is no any devices.

So any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

P.S i didn't install any HP drivers, when i am trying to Install Tape device Drivers it can't find any devices.

Hi,

Make sure that Device Manager in Windows sees the drives. If not, BE won't see them. You'd need to fix this first, and you can check:

1. Cables securely connected and terminated if need-be;

2. Symantec drivers are installed for the tape drives. Run tapeins.exe to install them (assuming the drives show up).

If these are SCSI autoloaders, make sure they're connected to supported cards...same with SAS.

Thanks!

Thanks for quick response.

I have two devices in device manager "Unknow Medium Changer".

These two scsi device are connected to two PCI-E scsi cards.

I cant install any BE drivers because it cant find any devices

...this is where your problem lies. You need to ensure that Windows sees the drives as well.

Are those HP SCSI cards? If so, what is the product #? If not, have you verified that those aren't RAID controllers as these don't support tape libraries or autoloaders?

Thanks!

I have two absolutely the same: 412911-B21 - HP SC11Xe Ultra320 Single Channel/ PCIe x4 SCSI Host Bus Adapter. BE2012 compatible with HP 1/8 G2 ultrium 920. So what should i do? Do i need to leave as it is in the device manager ("Unknow Medium Changer"), or i need to install HP drivers?

...that is the correct card. If you check the QS on the autoloader that card is shown as supported.

So that is fine...disconnect 1 autoloader and delete both from Windows. Run a device rescan and then let it detect the connected autoloader. Does it show the drive now? If not, check termination (especially if it has a SCSI terminator on it - must be on the correct port).

"Unknown Medium Changer" is correct. Don't change this.

Thanks!

My main proplem is that i have two robotic librares but i dont see any ready devices.

I have unpluged one device, deleted two devices and make a rescan, i have 1 library at this moment.

You can see in screenshot:1.jpg

BE sees what Windows sees. So if those tape drives don't show in Windows Device Manager, it's pointless to try sort this out from a BE perspective. You need to fix the WIndows issue first, and BE will then see the drives.

Thanks!

...you've only got half of it. Windows sees the robotics, but it doesn't see the tape drive. At all.

Without seeing the drives, BE won't see the drives. You need to refer to some of the advice I gave you above to get the drives seen in Windows, starting with disconnecting 1 drive.

Thanks!

1. Ensure that the Robotic Library is supported as mentioned in the HCL

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH205797

2. Install Symantec tape drivers for the tape drives in the Robotic Library using Tapeinst.exe (found in Backup Exec Install Folder. Also, install Microsoft drivers for the Medium Changers (After this, the changer would look as "Unknown Medium Changer" in Windows Device Manager)

3. Restart BE services and confirm that the RL is visible in Backup Exec and an Inventory can be performed.

Here is some added documentation that might help.

Does Device manager not see the tape drives at all?? IF not this must be corrected before B.E. is able to see and interact with them

I hope this posting was helpful

Device manager can see "Unknow Medium Changer". After i am tryin to install HP drivers i have some like "HP storageworks 1/8"

Please verify that your SCSI card has Multi-LUN support enabled.  Typically you would press CTRL-A or whatever is appropriate for that card, during the POST process, at the appropriate time.  If Multi-LUN support is not enabled, the operating system may not see all the devices on the SCSI bus.  This is also the first place to verify that the SCSI card can see the tape drives.

Once the tape drives are seen properly, you will be able to see them in device manager, either under "tape drives" (if drivers are bound) or in the unknown area.

If you find this is a solution for the thread, please mark it as such.

I will try to check this, but i have remembered one thing my Windows 2008 r2 server is virtual on ESXi 5.1

I found this article, I tried to make all parts in that manual but it didn't helped me.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH70246

And i noticed that VMware does not support Tape Drives connected directly to ESXi 5.x

This configuration has not been tested by Symantec and therefore, this is considered an Alternative Configurations. Try these technotes below and see if it helps

...support for SCSI pass-through for tape drives/autoloaders/libraries was stopped with vSphere 5.0.

Your best bet now is to make your media server a physical box...can't help you troubleshoot this further as a result until you can do so.

Thanks!

Thank you very much, CraigV. We have decided to move to physical server.
