As long as you have a good back to restore.

Just to verify, you said migration, so does that mean you are not actually doing an upgrade but using a third party tool to do a migration?

Could you share some more details so we are sure to give you the best advise?

is this just for planning for change control purposes or are you down hard and actually needing to do this?

In fact, i'm planning to migrate the enterprise vault 8 to 10. Want to have a rollback plan, if necessary.

The scenario is:

Server 1: EV8
Server 2: SQL 2005
Server 3: Exchange 2007 CAS
Server 4: Exchange 2007 CAS
Server 5: Exchange 2007 Mailbox
Server 6: Exchange 2007 Hub transport

Important: the Vault Stores are mounted in a storage. More specifically, 15 volumes of 500GB.
These volumes must be mounted at what time on new server EV10?

Do you have any tips?

How are you planning to do this migration?
The Vault Store partition need to be underneath the Storage Service, before it starts.

I will migrate the current server to version 9. (Windows Server 2003 SP2 Enterprise x86)
After i create a new server with version 10. (Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1) - New Hardware

Then I'll use the migration wizard.

I am concerned with the issue of storage. (Are 15 volumes)
The time to remove the volume from the first server and mount them on the second.

The migration process from 9 to 10 is too complex?

So you're going to do an inplace upgrade to EV 9 from EV 8, on the same server?
The upgrade/migration isn't complex provided you plan, and include running Deployment Scanner to check for issues before the upgrade.

Yeah, the migration to EV 9 will be made on the same server. (Inplace) - No problems

During migration to EV10, i first run the migration wizard and then dismount volumes from the source server ?

On the new server, i first mount the volumes and then run the migration wizard? (Target server)

I'm confused at this point. The execution order of activities.

Hello DVD IT.

Migrate from 9 to 10:

Make sure the new server has a green Deployment scanner!

On EV9 server, run Server Migration Wizard. Export settings.

Shutdown EV9 server.

Change (i.e. unmount volumes, mount to new server) storage and index!

Verify you see disks in same location

Run setup to install EV10. Run migration wizard, upgrade.

You need to have storage, index and sql available to the NEW server BEFORE you start the migration wizaqrd. Oh, and backup backup backup!

Thank you, Gertjan, MCSE, MCITP,MCTS, SCS, STS
