RPC failure causing backup to fail
Hello All,
Background
I have a new Dell Poweredge 1900 server which I've installed Windows 2008 Server and promoted it to a DC on our domain.
I've installed BESR 8 Server Edition and gone through the installation process fine.
I have not yet installed Sophos AV.
I've created a simple backup job to backup my system and data drives (Drives C and D; NTFS; two partitions on a hardware RAID 5 controller across 3 hard disks).
The Error: The backup always fails towards the end (after the Copy Volume data process has completed). Details of the error as as follows:
0) A Symatec message appears saying "Symantec Agent Service not running" (only spotted this once because a backup takes a while and the message only appears for 5 seconds)
1) I get a popup saying "The remote procedure call failed" with a link saying "More help on the web" (which is not clickable BTW - maybe to do with IE protection)
2) I get a status bar message saying "Error 800706be running job: <my_job_name>" and at other times "Cannot connect to the agent on <computer_name>"
3) A separate window shows "Service Module stopped working and was closed"
4) In the main BE window, I have to click "Reconnect" whcih then brings back my big red warning saying that I am at risk.
5) Event View (Application Log) shows:
Faulting application VProSvc.exe, version 8.0.2.26324, time stamp 0x48223511, faulting module VProImaging.dll, version 8.0.2.26324, time stamp 0x482234cf, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x0066890d, process id 0x67c, application start time 0x01c90396399d6e19.
So far, I have found a the thread here:
and followed the suggested guidance about RPC here: http://support.veritas.com/docs/292804. The only oddity I found is that my RPC Locator service is not running (set to Manual). I've set it now to Automatic and started it. Rerunning the backup still failed with the same messages.
Can anyone suggest anything? I can post more Events if required but they are pretty much informational all the way.
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Additional:
I assume this could be related, but when I am in the BESR interface and go to Tasks tab and "Run Recovery Point Browser" and then select a backup (e.g. FALCON_C_Drive003) the browser crashes!
Title: Microsoft Windows
Text: Recovery Point Browser has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working...etc... [Close Program]
Have you rebooted the server since installing BESR?
Actually, yes, I did reboot as part of the Install.
I've also rebooted after changing RPC (Locator) to Automatic/Started.
OK.
I've reinstalled BESR but it didn't fix the problem.
What has worked however is targeting the backup set to a local NTFS hard disk rather than a Network Attached FAT32 hard disk (Maxtor Shared Storage Drive).
Can anyone enlighten me on why the target drive would make the finalise process fail during a backup?
WIll I need to reformat the Maxtor Shared Storage Drive to NTFS in order to make it work? Or is it that fact that it is a NAS that is the problem?
Cheers, Chris
