RS for Clients Support extension and other news
All,
I wanted to update our valued RS customers with the following news.
1. We have extended the Full/Engineering Support timelines for RS for Clients:
Engineering Support
Recovery Solution for Clients 6.2 SP3 – until 7/1/2011
Recovery Solution for Clients 7.0 SP1 – until 1/2/2012
Technical Support
Recovery Solution for Clients 6.2 SP3 – until 11/26/2012
Recovery Solution for Clients 7.0 SP1 – until 7/2/2013
2. We are planning on updating RS for Clients 6.2 to add Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit) support in the first part of 2011.
3. We are adding a second free migration option for RS for Clients customers. In addition to the existing BackupExec System Recovery Desktop Edition (BESR-DT) customers may chose to migrate to NetBackup Desktop and Laptop Option (NBU DLO). Contact your Sales representative for further details.
Note: you must be current on your Basic or Essential Maintenance to receive support and be eligible for updates/upgrades/migration.
Best regards,
Rene Kolga

Great News!
Great news Rene, thanks for sharing this and continuing to carry the torch for Recovery Solution! There are a lot of customers out there (us included!) who are too far in to RS to easily jump out. Obviously BESR-DT and NB-DLO still don't quite meet all the functionality we've come to love/depend on in RS...but here's hoping there are some enhancements in the pipeline!
With all the talk about Cloud at Vision this year, I was hoping to see a nice Cloud option for NB-DLO...something like this filter/collection gets Cloud-based backup, this group uses on-premises storage server "X", these use server "Y", etc.
Thanks,
Kyle

Thanks for this info. BESR-DT
Thanks for this info. BESR-DT may not work for us since it can't resume a backup job.
Comparison
Hi,
Does anyone have a comparison sheet betweern the 3 products;
Our main reason for not moving to BESR2010 was that it doesnt support de-duplication.
Is Netbckup DLO something that is replacing BESR2010?
Thanks Steve
Hi Steve, We met with the PM
Hi Steve,
We met with the PM for NBU-DLO earlier this week...I think it you look at it very closely you will quickly determine that it is NOT a replacement for RS. I have not thoroughly investigated it, but it seems the NetBackup-DLO is Netbackup in name only. My assumption that DLO was a "bolt-on" to the robust (as I understand it) NetBackup product was confirmed to be incorrect. NBUDLO currently does not have any client-side de-duplication which is so powerful in RS.
If you do generate such a comparison document, please post it here on Connect! That would be a good item for some points, and very useful!
Thanks,
Kyle

RS 6.2 SP4 - Beta
Sean,
Currently we don't have an RS version that can run on the 64-bit OS (like SMP 7.1). This is something being evaluated.
Meanwhile, we have made RS 6.2 SP4 Beta available here - https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/ogproduct/...

Rene
RS 6 and NS7
Can the v6 RS agent communicating with a v6 NS/Recovery server setup co exist with an SMP7 agent reporting to a separate SMP7 system?
After a bit of experimenting...
It looks like it will work but you can't change any settings as they come via policy from the NS 6 Altiris Agent.
6.2 SP4?
Hi Rene,
The KB article still has the old dates listed in it, though it shows that the KB article itself was updated today. Is this just a caching problem? Could you post the new dates here in this thread?
Thanks!
Kyle

ITMS 7.1
Hi,
Will BESR2010 be available on the new platform to be released on March 7th along with all the other ITMS 7.1 ?
RS 7.0 under SMP 7.1???
With the pending release of SMP 7.1...will RS be updated to still function in the 7.1/64bit native console? I certainly hope so...or we'll be needing to re-evaluate our PC backup options quickly as we are hoping to begin out NS 7.1 migration from 6.0 late this summer...
Thanks,
Kyle

RS 7.1 confirmed
Kyle,
I'd like to confirm that we have received the approval for the RS 7.1 release. It'll add Win 2008 R2 64-bit support for RS Solution (SMP 7.1) and RS Server. Tentative release target (subject to change!) - Q3 2011.
This is very exciting!
Rene
Q3!!!!
ITSM 7.1 was just released! I have to wait half a year to upgrade! Are you kidding me!
