  • 1.  RU5 clients talking to MR4 server?

    Posted Oct 01, 2009 10:17 PM
We are not ready to pull the plug on RU5 just yet -- still struggling with issues after MR4 MP2 rollout issues --but would like to test client-side improvements and fixes that RU5 promises. Can we upgrade the client only, and have it communicate with the server, does anyone know? Would MR4 server recognize and accept RU5 client's connection?
    Thanks!

I dont think a RU5 client will talk to a MR4 server - I tried it on earlier versions and I didnt receive virus updates......but they could have changed it

Yes we had installed few Unmanaged RU5 clients on Windows 7, WInxp Clients & replaced the sylink file with the managed one.

The clients had become managed & got updated also. we have kept these PC's for 1 week in observation.

Note:- This is not recomended by symantec.

I too have tried several RU5 clients with MR4 MP2 SEPMs - no issues but as stated, not recommended.

Yes a SEP MR4 SEPM can manage RU5 clients, But this isnot recommned.

The version of SEPM should always be greater or equal to that of the clients.

Lower manger manging higher client may work for the time being but in a long run it may causes issues.

    Prachand and all,
Thank you for your replies. Prachand, in a long run it can cause issues with the SEPM and database or the clients themselves?
    Thanks!

Yeah, we started installing the RU5 clients on new machines that were brought up but waited for a good time to work on the server.  For the 3 or 4 days those RU5 cients seemed to be fine.  So, it seems to work alright.

I don't think there would be any issue to the Client , but it may cause issue to the database
